Turning our attention to the engine we need to get a bit more power out of the top end.

Mokka X make good sleepers if you debadge them and fit the most powerful engine mods and handling mods you can source!

Sadly with smaller engine sizes you are wasting your time spending money on modifications, so if this applies to you get yourself an engine swap then apply the following mods.

Tuning modifications.

These mods performance modifications are usually installed by our members, decide how far you want to push your car before you get going.

Getting the best sports upgrade kits for your planned usage of the car is essential. Stage 3 motor sport mods just don't work well on the road making the car difficult to drive.

Stage 1 modifications: Remap, Suspension upgrade (drop 30-40mm), Lighter flywheel, Panel air filter, Alloy wheels, Sports exhaust.

Stage 2 modifications: high flow fuel injector, Fast road cam, Ported and polished head, Power/Sport clutch, fuel pump upgrades.

Stage 3 modifications: Internal engine upgrades (pistons/head/valves), Engine balancing, Competition cam, Sports gearbox, Adding or upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger).

Peak power is all well and good but for a daily driven car you need a wide power band and perhaps extending the rev range.

The aim of our hints is to give a brief overview of modding performance parts and point you in the right direction, our forum is the place to go for detailed advice and tips on your tuning project, the best uprated upgrades and all aspects of modding cars.Fast road cams offer one of the biggest torque gains for your money as far as a stand alone uprated upgrades goes on a NASP engine.

It improves the intake and exhaust durations and pushes up the power if done right. Ideally you'd add other mods and finish up with a performance chip. We'd also caution you not to go with a motor sport cam as this affects the engines idling and general town driving characteristics.

Don't forget to look at the fuelling when you are increasing the power - it makes the car more thirsty.

If you find you experience flat spots and power surges after your modified parts you should check the fuelling and try a higher octane fuel as well. To get sufficient fuel you may need to uprate the injectors on your engine.

Uprate the fuel pump to cope with the extra fuel requirements of your tuned Mokka Xs uprated injectors.

Intake and Exhaust Tuning.

Now we move on to the intake and exhaust and ensure proper flow through the engine. Contrary to popular belief there is generally very little power gain achieved by fitting an induction kit, they only work well and are recommended after you increase the engines power to the point where the standard air intake box cannot cope!

Maximum power gains come from a full induction kit with a cold air feed on heavily tuned engines, this can be sited within an air box but a panel filter should suffice for most applications. TorqueCars suggest you use a panel air filter as these are easy to clean and maintain and generally perform better than paper ones.

Do not go with the largest exhaust you can buy this will slow up the exhaust flow rate - the best for power gains are usually between 1.5 to 2.5 inches. It is the shape and material more than the bore size.

Head work including a head port and polished and 3 or 5 angle valve job will really help to release the potential of the engine. A good fast road uprated clutch will help to keep that power going where it should. Never cut corners or ask the standard clutch to cope. The best mods that we recommend for your Mokka X are remaps, sports camshafts and induction improvements.

Turbo engines are just asking to be Upgraded. You will see large power gains on most modern turbocharged cars including diesels making a remap one of the most cost effective and large modifications for your money.

We've also seen some tuners toying with twincharged applications and making some very high power gains.

The most impressive power gains for NASP engines usually involve the addition of forced induction. Superchargers are generally easier to add than a turbo. With a turbo the power curve is related exponentially to the engine speed making it harder to map.

Superchargers, however will give a boost which is directly proportional to engine speed so is simpler. Decreasing the engines compression ratio will allow you to add forced induction, water injection may also help prevent detonation.

Handling/Suspension upgrades

Handling modifications are high on most peoples lists for the Mokka X.

We found that most Mokka X factory suspension setups need tweaking, a few degrees of toe out -around 1.5, and some negative camber will dramatically enhance your cornering and handling.

We would go to a maximum drop of 30mm - 37 mm on most models. You risk handling compromises if you go lower than this.

Alloy wheel upgrades.

Alloy wheels can help the brakes cool down and are generally lighter than the steel ones. Further improvements can be made to your cars handling with the addition of directional tread pattern tyre. The downside to large alloy wheels on your Mokka X is that you're changing your effective final drive ratio and this will have a detrimental effect on acceleration.

Due to this fact aim to keep the overall rolling diameter of the wheel the same as supplied from the factory. In all cases not going over 18 inches.
