Hyundai Tiburon Tuning

"Thank you for reading my Hyundai Tiburon tuning guide."

The Tiburon is a good project car to do. We see DIY mechanics wasting money on their Tiburon doing the wrong mods and then having to start over. Follow our guides to avoid making the common mistakes.

We look at Tiburon tuning and outline the best mods that work. Hyundai Tiburons are popular tuning projects and with carefully picked parts you can greatly maximise your driving fun.

Turning our attention to the Tiburon's engine we need to get a bit more power out of the top end.

With the right choice of mods you can turn your Tiburon into a hot hatch, beating larger cars on the track.

Smaller engines do not provide much of a return in terms of power so start with a bigger engine. Engine swaps are a good option if you have a small engine size.

Power mods.

This list of the stages and motorsport upgrades are usually fitted by our members, decide how far you want to push your car before you begin.

Getting the correct grade of performance mods for your planned usage of the car is vital. Stage 3 motor sport parts just won't work well on the road difficult in stop start traffic.

Stage 1 modifications: Suspension upgrade (drop 30-40mm), Sports exhaust, Remap, Panel air filter, Alloy wheels, Lighter flywheel.

Stage 2 modifications: Power/Sport clutch, high flow fuel injector, Ported and polished head, Fast road cam, fuel pump upgrades.

Stage 3 modifications: Competition cam, Engine balancing, Sports gearbox, Internal engine upgrades (pistons/head/valves), Adding or upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger).

You should keep as much low end power as you can and aim to achieve a wide power band across the rev range rather than a narrow top end power spike.

The whole point of our tips is to give a little insight into the world of modifying modifications and point you in the right direction, our forum is best place to go if you need more detailed advice and tips on your car tuning project, the best tuning kits and all aspects of modding cars. One of the most cost effective mechanical sports parts you can do to your NASP engine is to fit a fast road cam .

The exhaust and intake durations play a large part in your cars power band, but be careful here, getting this wrong can upset the idle and make the car impossible to drive in traffic. You'd need to follow a cam upgrade with other mods and finish with a reflashed ECU to fully release the power gain.

Don't forget to look at the fuelling when you are increasing the power - it makes the car more thirsty.

Frequently power losses, flat spots and erratic idling after tuning modifications are done can usually be traced to timing or fuelling issues. To get sufficient fuel you may need to increase the injectors on your engine.

If you've uprated your fuelling with bigger injectors you will also need to get a bigger fuel pump to supply it.

Intake and Exhaust Tuning.

Now we move on to the intake and exhaust and ensure proper flow through the engine. Please note that WE DO NOT FEEL YOU GET POWER GAINS FROM INDUCTION KITS, unless you have tuned your car with over 30 percent more power and are finding that the standard air intake has become limited.

For most Tiburon engines TorqueCars would suggest you just go with a washable panel air filter. On heavily tuned engines and turbo vehicles an induction kit will help release the power providing you address the problem of needing cold air.

Sports exhausts can help equal out the flow of air through the engine. But if the exhaust pipe is too large, ie: over 2.5 inches bore, you will lose much of the flow rate and end up sapping power and torque.

Airflow through the head can be dramatically increased with some professional flowed (porting and polishing). These should match and be setup to take into account any other engine mods. In nearly all cases of Tiburon tuning your clutch will start to complain and this needs an upgrade - read our overview on clutches for more information. The best mods in our experience for your Tiburon are a remap especially on a turbo, a fast road camshaft and sports exhaust, with a good air intake.

Turbo engines are just asking to be Upgraded. You will see large power gains on most modern turbo engined cars including diesels making a remap one of the most cost effective and large modifications for your money.

We've also seen some tuners toying with twincharged conversions and making some very high power figures.

The most significant power gains for NASP engines usually involve the addition of forced induction. Superchargers are usually easier to add than turbos. With a turbo the power curve is related exponentially to the engine speed making it difficult to map fuelling with.

The nice directly proportional boost and rpm characteristics of the supercharger make them easier to map. Adding forced induction will generally require a lower compression ratio or water injection.

Handling/Suspension upgrades

Many Tiburon owners uprate the handling of their cars with sports suspension parts as a priority, this will certainly increase your enjoyment of the car.

We found that most Tiburon factory suspension setups need tweaking, a few degrees of toe out -1-1.7, and slight negative camber will often benefit your cornering and handling.

We suggest that you fit motorsport suspension and lower the car by 22mm - 40 mm. Larger drops require arch work - especially on models already equipped with performance suspension.

Alloy wheel upgrades.

Because alloys are lighter they improve performance and they will help to cool the brake disks. We can't go into too much detail here about tyres but they are how the car puts the power down on the road so are a critical choice. directional tread pattern tyres work well on Tiburon, and make a big difference over budget tyres. Large Tiburon alloy wheels can decrease performance. If you get big alloy wheels you will be changing your final drive ratio.

Because of this we would advise sticking to a maximum wheel size of 17 inches, although we know some of our members have fitted larger wheels with no problems.
