i understand that after performance parts the computer may adjust things so you need to change things in the computer. so how do you remap it. will i need to buy some crazy expensive thing or will it be relatively cheap and easy?

It's not so much that the ECU will change things. It's more so that it won't change enough things to take full advantage of your other modifications. Given 1991 age of your car it's very likely that all the electronic stuff will work in the analog domain. It's still a computer, broadly speaking, but the mode of operation is quite different to today's 32 bit digital devices.

what car are we on about what age ?

if its newer than 2001 then look towards remap - this is something you cant really do yourself. rather pay the garage to map it for you

older cars will need the ECU out and the fueling map chip swapped for another one with a new map on it

It's a very specialist job so get googling. I've taken Superchips UK's figures as an example. Nissan Primera 1.6 GA16DE) and they can gain only 6bhp from it.

Those GA16 engines are bullet proof though. Once fully warm you can drive as hard as you like. Nissan's endurance and durability testing is brutal.
