Got this idea of another thread. When tightening up nuts (wheel bearings etc,) does anyone take account of the torque or just do it as hard as possible?

When doing wheel bearings on Mk4/5 Escorts used to just use guesswork and a large bar to do them as hard as possible - the manual had a ridiculously high rating and was damn hard to reach this. But think now with the Scooby, if i have to do them, i will follow the book.

Does anyone else take note of the torque measurements for wheel bearing nuts etc,,, when putting them back on?

I always torque and angle whatever is required, once an engineer always an engineer! That also includes wheel nuts/bolts!

Obviously there are some settings that are way too low to even get a reading unless you have silly expensive equipment.

I guess it depends what I'm tightening. Plugs - finger tight then 1/4 of a turn. Wheels tend to go as tight as I can get them with a short wrench. Head bolts need pretty precise torque.

It's also worth noting that the torque settings differ between a dry and lubricated bolt. If you are checking torque settings make sure you do it the same dry/wet.
