Aerodeck 1.8vti
Hi all,

am thinking of getting a aerodeck 1.8vtec, was wondering if you had any advice on getting one, what to look out for, etc, etc, i currently drive a e30 325i, previous to that an MR2 turbo which so far would have to say is the best car i've ever owned!
i have a budget of about £1500 any advice would be appreciated.

cheers kern

Alright bud, welcome to TorqueCars! What makes you want an Aerodeck as apposed to a smaller, lighter Civic?

Hello mate,

i need an Aerodeck because I've got a nipper on the way, so need 4 doors plus boot space! I know the Aerodeck is heavier but is there much of a difference in performance?

cheers

Hi Kern and welcome, is this going to be a second car?

Hi Wayne,

this is gonna be my daily driver, can't afford to run 2 cars! so thought the Aerodeck would be a good compromise on performance and practicality!

welcome to tc mate, if the engine is good and your getting the car handy, grab it
i think their a dohc vtec, you'll make your money back when you want to sell by just the engine alone

Performance wise there isn't really a lot of difference apart from the added weight. Have you thought about an Accord (the Type R version can be picked up fairly cheaply nowadays and can really perform) ?

The boot space on Civic's may suprise you, even with my Coupe I could easily fit in the boot twice!

haven't really thought about the Accord typeR as thought it would be out of price range, i also thought they had bigger engines so am thinking they might be abit thirsty! am i wrong??
my last 2 cars have been so thirsty 25mpg in the beemer and about 20 in the tubby! so thought a 1.8 would be better!

The aerodecks o.k,Why not the smaller hatchback version mb6,decent performance, little bit lighter, still roomy for ya nipper and decent fuel comsumption when driven steady.Go for the vtis model,Ya get the lips and side skirts.Looks abit more sporty.

Hi Kern,

Just bought a 1.8 aerodeck vti and love it, my first Honda and cant get enough of that vtec, also when im behaving im getting a good return on the mpg. Performance seems good upset a few folks already and definately enjoying the bonus of the estate, swallows the mountain bikes no problem...

good look with your search

Should get a decent 1 with that cash.Id go with the hatchbach mate, still big enough for the nipper, just half a sec quicker than the aerodeck.Vtis tho for body kit.Thing wi these is no tourqe bottom end sluggish,But after 3000rpm it picks up and then 45OO rpm the car flys mate all they way to 8200rpm.Once you feel the vtec you will be hooked.Bullet proof b18c4 engine.Ya can hammer these engines all day long. The other bonus is most of the mods/upgrades engine parts can be sorced of the integra type r,throttle body, cams etc and afew tweeks to the suspension it will handle very well.Could go on and on;) but will wait to see if you buy.

Hi Pye,

just sold the beemer and am now on a lookout for a decent aerodeck, if you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for yours, also what mileage did it have?

to everyone else, thanks for the responses, just a couple more questions, should i be worried about 100k plus ones? and what are these engines good for?

cheers

Alright Kern,

I paid £1100 after some bartering, it had 115k on the clock but runs like a dream. So quiet, so much better than the younger mondeo it replaced. The engine and box is incredibly reliable if well looked after, I have just recently had to replace the clutch but it was the original one and for miles and year it was to be kinda expected, whilst it was out I did the cam belt, due ever 60,000.

The best advice I can give is that what was given to me, check for good service history, good clean oil at a good level (the engine do use oil quite regular)

Im over the moon with the car, and no happily searching for bits to add more horses!

Hope this helps

hello mate,

thanks for the advice, from the sounds of things you got quite a good deal, have been looking and am finding it hard to find a decent one for less than £1700! and most of the ones i've been looking at have at least 105k+ on the clock, so just wanted to know what these engines are good for! will hopefully have one by next week as have finally sold my car and have some cash to play with!
having experienced a turbo, and straight six i'm now very keen to drive a vtec, and to be honest i can't wait!

once again, thanks for the advice, and will hopefully have mine soon!

With £1700 buddy if you keep looking 1 will pop up with good mileage with good service history and cambelt done.Keep regular oil changes cause the v-tec works of oil.I do mine every 4000miles.The engine will out last the car.Mines done 115,000 and still pulls like a train.Just wait till the car is warm before using the v-tec.

As long as its got service history and been well maintained then don't worry. It's a Japenese engine it will if treated right run forever.

Hi mate. I mine isnt a Vtec but i picked it up for a grand with full Honda service history and only 72k on the clock. All the extras, full leather, electrics, air con etc. We travelled from Northern Ireland to England to get it as your motors sell privately for a lot less than here. Its a great car and i love it, but I have to admit the Vtec would have been a better option engine wise.

hi mate,
as far a getting cambelt and servicing done, would you go to a local mechanic or a honda specialist, also do you or anyone know how much getting a new cambelt would cost? oil changes no probs, as i use to have to change the oil on my mr2 every 4-6k.

cheers

If your car doesnt have a full Honda service history then i would just get it done @ a good private garage as there is no difference quality wise. If it does then go to Honda. Mine was £155 + VAT for the cambelt @ 60k and that was @ a Honda dealers about 2 years ago. Mine is the SOHC so im guessing yours would be a bit more as its the DOHC.

I'm finally going to look at one tomorrow, having spoke to the guy, he reckons the vtec kicks in at 6000rpm??? does that sound right as i always thought they kicked in about 4500rpm? any advice welcome.

cheers

Cambelt is near enough the same price as the soch.Got mine done at honda was £150 i think.yeah v-tech pops in about 5400 then hits from 6000 up to 8200.If your unsure about it kicking in.Open car door and Rev to about 5400 and ul here a change in tone like a pop.Thats when it kicks in.But you will know when you drive it about.Check the back brakes as they are prone to ceasing too.Mine did.By the way you will sucome to the front fog lenses braking.Everybody does.Cheap up grade from halfords.£30

cheers dude,

just phoned local Honda garage, they quoted me £270 for cambelt plus parts and labour??? didn't actually realise what they had said until i got off the phone! still wondering what the £270 is for!! haven't called them back just gonna go to local mechanic, as it'll be alot cheaper!
still looking for a decent aerodeck, its always the way, when you don't have cash, there's loads, when you got money waiting..... nothing!

Have you scanned autotrader.Theirs a silver 1 private.its done 100,000.looks tidy.Want £1095.Could still get bit more of if it hasent had cam belt done.Plus has full mot.Wi rest ya cash could give it full service.Depends if your wanting under 100,000 mile tho.Private sale.

hello mate, been on autotrader every day! saw the one on there for £1095, no tax and no reciepts for any cambelt at all! seemed a little too keen to sell too, maybe just being paraniod! but liked the blue on there, only 80,000 too, but sold! always the way, will keep looking, have never seen a black one on there! are they ultra rare or just everyone with a black one wants to keep!

Yeh saw the blue 1.Has the vtis lips.looked nice.Took mi a while to get mine.Just kept at,and then it poped up.Got a right bargin the other day tho.Got the vtis skirts and back lip for £45.Had to travel, but worth it when they are sprayed up and put on.

Have you tracked one down yet? It's worth keeping an eye on the Honda dealers, they get good ones but you will pay a premium for it.

still looking dude! been looking every day! all the good low mileage ones on the autotrader are miles away! there was a local-ish one on there that had about 60k but no service history! had a look on a few dealer websites but you have to pay silly money for those!

am beginning to think about maybe getting a vti-s hatch instead! but did really want the aerodeck!

Is there much in it between the hatch and areodeck in terms of storage? They look pretty much the same length to me.

think i've just found one!! 102k on the clock, service history upto 98k, cambelt don't need replacing till 126k (according to service book!) full years mot but no tax, '98 s reg, £1495!

just one more question..... does that sound like a good deal fella's???
