Pure Acetone.

Mythbuster's tested it and found it reduced fuel economy. But they are hardly scientific sometimes they get it wrong.
 
depends on what you read some say yes and others say no.
some say it damages seals etcetera other not

but if it did wouldnt the petrol companies put it in their premium fuels ?
 
We have discussed acetone as a petrol additive to increase octane. A lot of the effect depends on the engine. You will need to mix the acetone properly and there is a risk that plastic pipes and seals will be dissolved by adding it so personally I decided not to risk it.

Some engines run more economically on higher octane fuel but it depends a lot on how the engine works. A closed loop engine will trim itself and push nearer to the knock threshold. Higher compression engines responds better and jap cars seem to love high octane fuel.
