3000gt vr4
hiya guys , this is my first post so sorry to be rude
ive just bought a 3000gt vr4
im not quite sure what the prob might be , i dont think its a slipping clutch but im prob wrong! lol

right ... when i give it beans in 1st its totally fine 100% of the time
when i give it beans in second 50% of the time its fine 50% of the time the revs rise to 3500ish then i get surge of power for a sec then it backs off a bit
when i give it beans in 3rd the revs get to 3500ish then the revs keep rising and limited power (like a slipping clutch) but surely this would be happening in 1st and second aswell?
any suggestions/help please guys? :embarrest:

Hello and welcome to TorqueCars. Nice to meet you.

Country bumpkin is bound to have come across this before. Is first and reverse a bit crunchy? Is this an auto or manual box? Does the "slip" happen in gear or just after you change gear?

By the description of your car with the VR4 i assume you are in the U.S.A ?
Anyway it is hard to tell properly from your description as i don't know if you have any modifications which could account for the power surges like a faulty or incorrectly set boost controller.
With the handbrake on fully, first gear engaged and some revs, does the engine stall when you release the clutch or does the clutch slip. This is assuming that the handbrake is correctly adjusted though.
Yes, in most cases it would slip in the lower gears but not always, one of my own GTO's had a slipping clutch that only gave way in third gear onwards with a bit of a heavy right foot. Obviously it eventually gave up the ghost.
Is the clutch pedal quite heavy ? This is normally a sign of a high mileage or old/worn clutch, the pedal really should be relatively light. Don't be fooled by the misconception that an uprated clutch should be as heavy as hell either, most of them are no different in pedal pressure than stock items, though they do have a higher clamping pressure to the flywheel.
Hope that helps, if not give me some more detail on any mods.
Where are you located anyway ?

Just to add, try going up an incline/hill and give it some revs, if it slips then, then yes it's the clutch.

thanks for replys guys
im in hampshire (southampton)
light mods , filter , decat, y-pipe ....... no boost controller
yeh the pedal is quitre heavy , the car stalls when i lift clutch , all gears go in very easily including reverse
i gave it a blast through the gears last night up2 ..... legal speeds (cough) on several occasions , and if i accelerate through the box its totally fine and goes like stink
just as a side question what speeds should i be getting at the redline in each gear?
as i think my speedo maybe out also ... im hitting 43-46 in 1st and nearly 80 in second! cant be right surely? i know the gears are long but 80?

thanks iain

starting to think it maybe e.c.u related? i think i might take it to rising sun at alton to have a look , i know there skyline specialists but they know there stuff with jap cars

If you want to give me a call at work and explain more i may be able to help better. We build GTO's. www.sumiyaka.co.uk or have a look at my profile.
Answering these types of question via a forum are always difficult as it may take a long time to get the whole picture.
The only way you can own a 3000gt VR4 is if it's a left hooker imported from the States. U.K./European spec is 3000GT. JDM are GTO's.

ok matey may well do that thanks , where abouts in devon are you? it could well be worth a trip down to you for me if you could have a look at it , would rather spend more in fuel and get someone who knows the car well rather than waste my time with a company that might not have an answer for me
p.s. thanks for the heads up on the vr4 .... only reason i called it that is that it has 3000gt vr4 on my boot! will be removing that me thinks!
thnaks iain
