looking to do my test so i'll be a new driver so i'm looking for a cheap car, i'm 21 and i know a 5dr adds money to my premium, so looking for a 3dr. got a mate with a pug 206 1.6 8v who has offered me it for 750 has done 120k miles, i want a pug as i know there cheap and easy to fix and mod. any advise would really be helpful

needing a car under £1k. focus is a nice car but not sure about performance tuning, and from what i've read it's a pretty heavy car, i could drop to a 1.6 fezza, my gf hates the ford ka so that's out.

5 door cars are cheaper as you have more exits in an accident. At 21 I had a Honda Civic EJ6, but I'd also been driving for 3 years. I would just get something cheap to run for the year.

yeah i was thinking that, something like a old 106 1.1 would do for now. could always strip it when my insurance goes down and use it for rally cross lol

i've looked at the pug and it came back with just under 1400 fully comp that was through compare the market though

Not too bad at today's prices tbh. Try Adrian Flux (site sponsor) and tell them you're a TC member. They'll give you a 15% discount. Other than that play around on Confused.com. Do things like adding your mum on the policy as a named driver.

Select a few cars from (for example) Pistonheads and use them to get quotes. Ranging from the 106 to anything else you may fancy.

Try Aviva or You could get a fun classic car (mini, skoda or imp etc) and put it on a classic policy (but earn no bonus) or but insure some 3 cylinder thing and drive an XJR on the entitlement to drive someone elses car not belonging to you....maybe. (back in the day I was insured for a 2cv and drove a lancia twin cam 2l

How about something VAG? A Golf for example is big enough for shopping and kids, but also decent enough to play with. The old mk3s are quite cheap now. As I've said above, you need to play with insurance prices.

1. It's none of her business :)

2. The Ka has truly gruesome brakes - leave well alone.

3. Try a Focus, they're not bad.

4. Tuning - your insurance will sky rocket. Get a 2.0 Focus Zetec and keep it standard

it is her business lol i don't like the ka either lol what size engine does the mk3 golf have? i've had a good long look at focus's but they are just too heavy. i want something small, quick and nimble that i could turn into a rallycross car when i can afford a to get a better car lol

yes.

because they are RWD and (to the insurance company) you'd be an inexperienced driver.
but you may strike lucky with some insurance company or another.

i'm 23 with 6 years no claims and i'm still paying a grand for a 22 year old BMW... and thats 3rd,F&T only...

I'm pretty much the same. A BMW is not the best first car imo as the insurance will be too high.

i'd get mine 3rd party anyway. does insurance go up or down the more miles you say you'll be doing?

Down, but to a point. Some companies do a limited mileage policy. Usually around 3000.

This is the last time I'll say it mate... Get yourself on confused.com, and play around with different cars and different settings (e.g. your mum on your policy, less miles, bigger excess etc) and go from there.

Buying the car won't be your problem, it'll be insurance.

using my phone so can't get quotes yet. so you're just suggesting i bash round on auto trader looking at cars then get a quotes? sounds like a plan. cheers guys for all your help. i'm glad i joined torquecars

Exactly that mate. Pistonheads is good as well. Collect a few adverts of various cars you like and 'borrow' the number plates for quotes. You might be lucky and find you can insure something half decent. ;)

You're welcome! We're all here to learn mate.

I've found moneysupermarket to be a good site.
I did a quote yesterday for a laugh on an Escort Cossie with a value of 13 grand and it came back with £300 fully comp wit £250 excess.

mine was around £1800 with a £250 excess, so i added a voluntary excess of £300 and got my quote down to £1400, i was shocked considering the volvo s40 t4 is 200bhp lol i'll try money supermarket next time. cheers for the heads up
