I have an e38, excellent car, the trouble with the e38 it was built by accountants and the e32 was built by mechanics.....They both have their problems as do all cars, but I do love my e38 due to the power and all the toys but there again more to go wrong, it is essential to have a diagnostic kit with both models but particularly the e38 due to so many electrical items, I have now covered 78,000miles (153,000 on clock) and had to change the waterpump, gearbox and two tyres, total cost as I DIY'd the WP and box was £650 and the tyres £180 so pretty good, passed the last 4 mot's straight through, the box failure is down to BMW's life time fluid which is a load of rubbish it needs to be changed 80 to 100k and then every 30-40k after that or your box will go,although the boxes on the V12 seem to be bullet proof even with out changing the fluid ... E65/66 or an FO1 will be my next when the prices drop, but I will still keep the e38 just due to its stance, best ever looking 7 series IMHO.
