Hi All,

Recently just come off a 12 month Ban -_-!

Now bought a 2002 VW Bora 1.9TDI SE , Insurance is £3500 on a 1.2 Vauxhall Corsa, £3100 on a Peugeot 106 1.1 & £3200 on the Bora!

VDUB All the way!

Wondering how to go about changing this vehicle! Just sent it off to get a whole new Interior change! Leathers & Heated seats FTW!

Its the 6 Speed 130 BHP with 215K on the clock! Iv been told these last for a hell of a lot mileage wise so taking the plunge! Looking to get some extra BHP out of this so considering a map however its still running on the same original Turbo so definitely need this upgrading! Also thinking of a new Front mount inter cooler but these are bloody expensive for the 1.9's! Anyone done anything similar?

Previous Owner said its had a conversion from a Dual Mass Flywheel to Single! I think this is the reason its got a vibration from hell before 1000 revs! Anyone else had this?

Could really do with some ideas on how to turn this into a real VDUB! PICTURES ARE APPRECIATED!

Hi GTIKID!

Welcome to TorqueCars!

What did you get a ban for? I don't know too much about the PD engines, but I am aware of the chocolate camshafts. So be careful when tuning the car as these tend to be the weakest link in these engines.

Hi Davalav,

Thanks for the welcome! Long story short I turned 19, Had a Hell of a night but didnt quite make it all the way home!, Got pulled about 2 miles before my house after travelling 25 miles and booked!

12 months without a car has been torture, Like having your legs cut off!

Can you elaborate more on this?

Howdo.

I had a Bora 130, remapped it at 98k, from 130/220 to 170 bhp, 290lbft, kept it under the clutch max rating. The remapper reckoned about 190bhp/330lb ft was as much as you would want to go with the standard turbo and IC and would also kill a standard clutch so that's why I only went to 170/290.

I had it for another 45k without engine or turbo issues. It shifted pretty good too, especially mid-range, 3rd gear stuff. Wheel-spinned like crazy if you tried to do full throttle standing starts in the wet, but if you worked with the torque and not against it you could make quick progress.

I do know these turbos are strong but can suffer from sooting up and sticky actuator rods but you can sort this with a good dose of innotec turbo cleaner.

If you haven't done it already, get a pair of uprated bulbs in the dipped beam, cos as standard the lights are pitiful. I actually stopped the first time I drove it at night cos I thought the dipped had failed and it was just running sidelights. I investigated HIDs but never put them in the Bora cos it didnt have projector lights.

If it hasn't got cruise you can do this fairly cheaply if you're good with car maintenance. You get a new cruise indicator stalk off Vw, or ebay if you can find it, then you have to remove the steering wheel and shroud to replace this and do a bit of wiring in. It's a ballache to get to one of the junction boxes as VW in their infinite wisdom stick it where you have to take off one of the wiper arm rods to get to it. I ended up splicing into the right wire further down as I didn't fancy dismantling the wiper arms.

If I can remember anything else I'll put in on here, or ask me a question and it might jog my memory. Sold the car about a year ago to a workmate at my old place but I still see it on the roads occasionally so I guess it's still going.

Cheers

Hi Yugguy,

Thanks for the info! Should help a lot! I've got a mate of mine doing a HID Conversion on it so that should resolve the light issue!

As for the Remap! I've been advised against it without redoing the Turbo as well as changing back to a Dual Mass flywheel as Iv been told they wont cope for long! Any idea's where I can look to find a worthy turbo to put in? Not after heaps of power so wondering if a standard one would do or whether its worth putting a Stage 2 in? I guess if im gonna get charged for labour I may as well get the stage 2 in!

Amazingly its still running on the original Turbo 200k miles later which is surprising to say the least! Also anyone changed to a High end Clutch? Worth doing or not?

Cheers

Greetings and a Warm Welcome to our TorqueCars Forum my Friend!

Good to have you along with us :)

Some early PD engines suffered from premature cam wear due to sub standard parts fitted to a select amount of engines. These were mainly fitted in MK4 Golfs, but have been known to be found in Seats, Skodas and Ford Galaxys which used the PD engines. As long as the car has had its oil changed regularly, then you should be okay.

As long as the turbo is oiled, and has no play in the shaft I can't see why it wont last. If you have the £££ you could upgrade to a hybrid turbo. It would be recommended to fit a front mount intercooler to keep charge temps down. Even these eBay kits are quite good.

Howdo. Weird you have a single-mass fly on the standard engine. I'd always understood that people fitted singles to cope with a modded engine's extra torque. But I'm no expert tbh. I've also heard with singles the vibration is something you have to live with.

Regards the turbo there should be loads of reconned ones about as the PD engine was everywhere, it's still about today in some new VAG cars.

Can't remember if the turbo out of the PD150 is different than the 130. I do know the 150 had an FMIC so maybe if you can get one of these from a scrappy it would be cheaper than a new FMIC from Forge or wherever.

£3,200 is quite a lot to pay for insurance. You know there are insurance companies that specialise in providing *Removed URL as per our T&C's* Who did yours?

I know that Keith Michaels provide low prices and good cover. When my friend got banned for drink driving they insured him and gave him a discount for going to a drink drivers course. He was happy. They might be worth looking into.

Hi and belated welcome to TC

Just starting to go over to VW tuning options myself after selling my pride n Joy so heres what I found

Darkside Developments seem to be the gurus on turbo upgrades. They can be found on Ebay or full range of kits on their website.
Awesome GTI or Celtic Tuning do remapping and upgrades which are highly regarded

Remap alone will see you get an impressive increase as has already been mentioned. Turbo upgrade then insurance will rocket as will all the other parts you'll need to control and cope with the power especially the torque steer. For example my GT170 Tdi will cost £2.5k to get to 250hp'ish' and I'm still not sure the Golf can really use that in the real world.
