From what I can make out the EGR valve lowers emissions.
Just to clarify what an EGR valve is - it is an exhaust gas recirculation valve. They are fitted to many cars in many guises and are fitted to most modern VAG derived engines. This is not a DPF filter, it merely allows exhaust gases to flow back into the engine so any carbon deposits can be burned off and it raises the intake temps causing an engine to use less fuel.
Some people say that as it's closed when you need performance there are no gains to removing it.
Others claim they are the main culprit for clogging up an engines intake system.
I've also heard claims that fuel economy drops when the EGR valve is removed.
What are your thoughts on what these valves do and whether we actually benefit from removing them.
