Surprise surprise, something else has broken on the Musso. Was driving back home a couple of days ago and the temperature gauge started getting excited so did the usual and whacked the heater on full while turning the air conditioning off and turned the engine off when the traffic had stopped - did the trick and got back in one piece - seems the water pump (the only part of the cooling system so far no replaced) had decided to stop functioning properly. (needless to say if this happened on the Scooby i would trun it off straight away and take it back on a trailer but the Musso is just a tank). Dont reccommend turning the heater on full when its 35C outside but great dieting idea.

Any else have any other tricks on how to reduce the engine temp to allow you to get back in one piece when its overheating?

Other than keep stopping turning on the heater matrix is the only way. Opening the bonnet slightly to create a vent and let it cool down (with the car parked up!), also keeping speed up and engine revs low will also help with a light throttle.

It sounds like you were lucky there.
