What is the biggest mistake you have ever made when buying a car?

I stupidly bought a car via a "friend" without seeing it first. The car was a real dog with rust everywhere. The front suspension nearly collapsed on me and all the sills needed welding right along the sides!

A diesel Escort estate. It was crap. It didn't have an intercooler and it was slow as hell. Only bought it cause the td mondeo i had at the time the cam belt tensoiners let go. Sold the escort after about 3 days an put the mondeo back on the road.....

After reding what you've said above, I think it's just something with you! Name one car you've had that hasn't broken down!

I haven't really made any mistakes when buying a car, although saying that I've only ever bought 2!

I've had an impreza that never broke down. I had a 214 rover that never broke down. Plus many more. And may I ask what do you mean by what i've said above????

Anything can go wrong with any car, mines never let me down.

If you check it over properly before you buy, engine bay, good test drive etc then it helps a lot.

dont agree with the engine bay, some are stunning but only because its been cleaned before selling. some are covered in caked crud but run great.

for example my civic ran great when i sold it but the engine bay was in a hell of a mess

Yep some get steam cleaned an then not started until the buyer arrives just to hide oil leaks. An oily engine doesn't mean its a bad engine...

About other cars of your being broken. Sounds like you've had a fair share of cars actually. You should start you're own thread in the gallery!

Most of the 1's that broke down where 500 quid or less run arounds.....
Which is all i've been able to afford over the last few years due to insurance an finances etc....

I made the mistake of buying a Renault 5 ONCE! After three head gaskets I drove it straight into the scrapyard and said you can have it! The one and only Renault I ever owned!

My brothers car set its self on fire in tescoes car park, think buying that one was a mistake!!!

4 of his cars have either busted or crashed, but they were rust buckets. we still laugh about them now.
