ive noticed (duh) that alot of cars have disc brakes on the fron wheels
then barrel brakes, bung brakes(?) if thats what there called on the rear, but is it possible to convert these rear brakes into disc brakes, cos they dont look nowhere near as nice esp when you get alloys :s

Yes it is. Get a set for your car from a 220 or 420 GTi from a breakers yard. You may need the servo as well. Most garages will be able to do the conversion for you but it is worth ringing around for prices.

It will make a big difference to your braking. Especially if you get the bigger vented front disks.

ya its easy changing from drum brakes to discs will need the hub and hand brake stuff but its easy

Only if you want to have Brembo on the calipers (Or AP or Baer etc). There are other brake specialists out there (Willwood, Hi-Spec) that do similar kits for a lot less - usually betwen £500-1000. Don't pay over the odds for something you don't need, unless you are into brandupmanship or a fashion victim.

You can get fake plastic caliper covers now from ebay! Trouble is they melt if they get too hot!

Cheers OG, I have looked around...D2 looked quite interesting, however, they were not willing to help. Brembo were. I believe you pay for quality...and if I have to pay more to have the top of the range, then I usually will. I think where brakes are concerned you should never cheap out (not saying £500 is cheap though!).

you dont have to get bigger brake kits normally if you have drums it means your a low power or a lower model just a theory but like in my rover 414, i can put the 420 (2.0T) back disks on mine with a bit of work !

P.S you sound like you want it for looks not performance so that may be the solution also i can get brembo pads for my 420 brakes so they are semi drilled / slotted looks nice

Quality costs, agreed. However, quality doesn't have to be expensive. Just because there is a small crocodile on the T shirt doesn't actually mean that it is any better than one without it (and probably made on the same production line), it just means you pay twice as much for it

I am using Hi-Spec calipers on all four corners of my car at a total cost of less than £650. Give them a call so at least you have a comparison.

The Radical uses Hi-Spec calipers and discs.

yea to be honest drum brakes dont look good with alloys, esp when you see people painting them :s so i want to get them converted just as cheap as possible so probably the 420 or 220 is the way forward, them get an upgrade when i get a bigger engine!
