Hey guy,

All of you talk about mods for 1.8T, but what about 1.8 model (92kw) are there any mods for it? Anybody tried something? What about putting turbo in it? Or is it better just to buy 1.8T instead. Thanks :blink1:

Hello and welcome to the nuthouse mate ;)

there are mods available for the NASP 1.8 engine however the gains are not great. for the money you could spend to get it up to even the 150bhp standard of the turbo, you could have bought the turbo same power but more torque and you can still mod it.

its not as easy as just fitting a turbo as the internals of the engine are different

It's a lot easier and cheaper in the long run to buy the 1.8T.

The best mods for NASP car engine are as follows.
Internal work yields the biggest gains, head work like porting polishing and 3 angle valve jobs will maximise the airflow and raise the power.

Bigger valves are an obvious addon but not all engines are suitable as it depends how close together the OEM valves are.

A fast road cam will yield good power gains, especially in the top end of the rev range. Don't go mad though a profile of up to 270 degrees will give the best gains without the engine becoming cammy.

The most popular power mods are induction kits (which are questionable as power mods but they can sound nice if that is your sort of thing) and sports exhausts with sports catalysts or decats.

To keep the car legal I'd recommend a sports catalyst rather than a decat.

Total cost of all these mods will run into the 1000's for a power gain of around 40-75bhp! Get a 1.8T instead, remap it for £300 and you have an extra 50bhp easy!

It's worth having a read of the articles on www.torquecars.com/tuning/ for more information on these mods and what the terms mean.

yup get a post 2001 1.8t and around £300 for a map as waynne says and you will be looking at 210bhp, few other little induction and exhaust mods tweeks tot he map and you will be around 225bhp - 100 more than the stock nasp engine

the difference in torque will be the main thing as well
stock
1.8 - 125 for both bhp and torque
pre 2001 1.8t - 150 bhp and 145ftlb
post 2001 1.8t - 180bhp and 172ftlb - a map will take this up to 212 and 230ftlb
note that there are 150 and 180 versions after 2001 but both map the same

S3 has forged internals if your wanting more power
max power on standard turbo

early 1.8 - 200
later 1.8 - 240
S3 - 290

after this you need a proper turbo

k03s became more or less the standard fit around 2001. some earlier ones will have then and if ive read the parts cat right then they were a replacement one for all engines after a while
