Right in todays world there are acronyms to cover nearly everything but the car is something else. Different manufactures call the same things different names so i thought that a list of the most common ones would help all car owners out there
so al start with what i can think of at the moment and update everything that anybody else adds and finally get it into alphabetical order

ABS - Advanced Braking System
EBD - Electronic Brake Distribution
AYC - Active Yaw Control
ICE - In Car Entertainment (sounds)
ESP - Electronic Stability Control (traction control )

please add more and i will add them to a full list

cheers
Paul

On a different note it's always amusing to see 'genuine reason for sale' in the classifieds.

Strangely they never tell you what the 'genuine reason' is.

Yes, it's genuine allright. It's a piece of unreliable junk that drives like a wheelie bin and eats fuel and money.

That's why the seller genuinely wants shot of the thing.

I saw an ad for a nicely tuned up Supra which ended after the spec list - girlfriend pregnant, GUTTED!

What about
GT - Grand Tourer
GTi - Grand Tourer Injection
Type R - Race spec (Honda)
(Notice how I steer the thread back on course!:))

Are you also looking for things like:

RCL = Remote Central Locking
ES = Electric Seats
EW = Electric Windows
EM = Electric Mirrors
ES = Electric Sunroof
CC = Cruise Control

I reckon if Paul could compose a complete list of these, it should be stickied and locked at the top of the general car chat forum. What you think Waynne?

PS:

Ford = First On Race Day ;)

HDi stands for High pressure Direct injection.

Peugeot carefully avoids the dreaded diesel word, although we all know HDi's are diesels.

Notice how Land Rover, Ford and Jaguar (who all use the same diesel engines) are careful to avoid the diesel word.

Perhaps 'Heavy Depreciation included' would suit better.

Or 'Hardly Driveable, innit?'

'Hinders Driving incessantly'....?

How about "It's another f.....g diesel car that the driver of which will incessantly bang on telling us about midrange torque and real world driveability. Who cares if it takes four years to get to sixty from a standsill if you can leave in in fifth gear at walking pace." OK, I can't quite wrap the acronym around that one but you get the general idea?

Only kidding, I quite rate the HDi engines.

Rgds,

Paul.

Hi, Mr Pedant here :)

Most of these are not actually acronyms (IMHO), they are initialisms.

Acronyms are initialisms that can be pronounced and usually create new words. For example:
RADAR = Radio Aid for Detection And Ranging
SCUBA = Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus
NATO = North Atlantic Treaty Organisation

Initialisms are the ones that can't be pronounced. For example:

IBM
TDi :)

There is a grey area, however, with initialisms that can, sort of, be pronounced. For example:
JPEG
VTEC

These are sometimes called acronym–initialism hybrids :)

Discuss :)

Good point. Keeping the things pronuncible is probably better for marketing purposes. It also allows for a reduction in 'sadbastardness' syndrome.

Here in Bradford, GTI stands for "Got Turbo, Innit!"

Trying not to repeat any, the ones I can think of off the top of my head are:

TDI - Turbo Direct Injection (Or maybe Tubo Diesel Injection?)
AWD - All Wheel Drive (A Subaru favourite)
WRX - World Rally Cross (And again)
STI - Sexually Transm... Erm... Subaru Technica International
VIN - Vehicle Identification Number
WRC - World Rally Car
VTEC - Valve Timing Electronic Control
DSG - Direct Shift Gearbox
ECU - Engine Control Unit
IVT - Infinitely Variable Transmission
DSC - Dynamic Stability Control
AMG - Auto Motors Group
DAC - Downhill Assist Control
TSI - Turbocharged Stratified Injection
CVT - Continuously Variable Transmission
ECT - Electronically Controlled Transmission

And for some reason I recall...

PSM - Porsche Stability Management
PTM - Porsche Traction Management

That's all I can remember at the moment :/
Sorry if I repeated any or got any of them wrong!

For variable valve timing one you forgot rovers VVC-Variable Valve Control(I think)
SIP Side impact protection (no idea why I still remember that, it's old)
OHC Over head cam
DOHC Dual overhead cam
FQ ******* quick(Another word for very) Evo heritage
