Don't just look at the peak power figures, you need to see the whole torque curve when determining if a mod is right for you Rexton.

With our advice your Rexton can make some decent track times and prove to be reliable daily driver.

Sadly with smaller engine sizes you are wasting your time spending money on modifications, so if this applies to you get yourself an engine swap then apply the following mods.

Tuning modifications.

These are the sports mods are usually carried out by our members, decide how far you want to go before you get started.

  • 2.0 L e-XDI 200 I4-T (diesel)
  • 2.2 L e-XDI 220 I4-T (diesel)
  • 2.7 L XDi 270 I5-T (diesel)
  • 2.9 L OM662 I5 (diesel)
  • 3.2 L M104 I6 (petrol)

Getting the best performance modifications for your planned usage of the car is vital. Stage 3 (competition) mods just won't work well on the road and will make the car undrivable.

Guide to the Best Tuning Mods & Upgrades

  1. Mods that Remove a Restriction

    If the intake or exhaust are restricted in any way this will have an impact on your cars performance, so use an induction kit/filter upgrade and better flowing exhaust whenever your tuning creates a flow restriction.

  2. Mods that Improve Handling

    Braking, Suspension and general alignment of the suspension components is vital for any tuning project even before you start increasing power.

  3. Fit Stronger Parts

    Tuned cars will show up weaknesses, typically in the turbochargers, clutch and internal engine components. Whilst most engines can cope with mild tuning mods, TorqueCars recommend that you upgrade the internal components before these weak spots manifest themselves.

  4. ECU Tunes & Remapping

    While some cars can be easily remapped, others may require piggyback ECU's or aftermarket ECU's but this is the most vital step of your tuning project as it fully releases the power from all of your mods and upgrades. Expect 10-20% on NASP engines and 30-40% on turbocharged units.

  5. More Power Needs More Fuel & Air

    Every tuning project will aim to increase the air supply, but fuel supply is just as vital and will need to match the air the engine can utilise. Fuel to Air ratio is vital so upgrade the fuel pump & injectors. Also you can look to perform head mods (flowing and porting), bigger valves, fast road cams and forced induction upgrades to improve fuel.

Stages of Tune

Stage 1 mods: Sports exhaust, Panel air filter, Alloy wheels, Lighter flywheel, Remap, Suspension upgrade (drop 28mm - 39 mm).

Stage 2 mods: Power/Sport clutch, high flow fuel injector, fuel pump upgrades, Fast road cam, Ported and polished head.

Stage 3 mods: Adding or upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger), Internal engine upgrades (pistons/head/valves), Competition cam, Engine balancing, Sports gearbox.

Your goal when tuning the engine should be a flat and wide torque curve. You don't want all the power to be at the top end unless you are creating a competition car.

The whole aim of our guides is to give a limited introduction of modifying mods and point you in the right direction, our forum is the place to go for detailed advice and tips on your tuning project, the best uprated modifications and all aspects of modding cars.Fast road cams offer one of the biggest power gains for your money as far as a single performance mods goes on a NASP engine.

It improves the intake and exhaust flow and pushes up the power if done right. Ideally you'd add other mods and finish up with a remap. We'd also caution you not to go with a motor sport cam as this upsets the engines idling and general town driving characteristics.

Don't forget to ramp up the fuelling when you are increasing the power - it makes the car more thirsty.

If you find you get flat spots and surges after your modified upgrades you should check the fuelling and try a higher octane fuel as well. Improving the injectors is another beneficial modification and will deliver sufficient fuel.

A fuel pump will only deliver a finite amount of fuel, so you may need to uprate this if your injectors are demanding more fuel.

Intake and Exhaust Tuning.

Now we move on to the intake and exhaust and ensure proper flow through the engine. Contrary to popular belief there is often very little power gain reached by fitting an induction kit, they only work well and are recommended after you boost the engines power to the point where the standard air intake box cannot cope!

Maximum power gains come from a full induction kit with a cold air feed on heavily tuned engines, this can be sited within an air box but a panel filter should suffice for most applications. TorqueCars suggest you use a panel air filter as these are easy to clean and maintain and generally perform better than paper ones.

Do not go with the largest exhaust you can buy this will slow up the exhaust flow rate - the best for power gains are usually between 1.5 to 2.5 inches. It is the shape and material more than the bore size.

Getting a professionally gas flowed head with larger valves can fully maximise your power gains. When you tune up your Rexton you will discover that the standard clutch starts to slip so get an uprated clutch. The best mods that we recommend for your Rexton are Remapping or piggy back ecu, fast road cam and air intake and exhaust.

Remaps offer massive power gains on all turbo charged cars. On NASP engines the benefits are doubtful. However a remap on a NASP engine will help unleash the potential if you have done a lot of mods. Despite the large cost involved adding forced induction to a NASP engine will give large power gains. Superchargers are usually easier to add than turbos. It is more challenging to map a turbo as the boost increases exponentially with revs.

The nice proportional boost and rpm characteristics of the supercharger make them simpler to map. Alternatively you could perhaps fit water injection to cut down knock.

Handling/Suspension upgrades

Many Rexton owners uprate the handling of their cars with modified suspension parts as a priority, this will certainly increase your enjoyment of the car.

We found that most Rexton factory suspension setups need tweaking, a few degrees of toe out -0.8 to 1.3, and some negative camber will radically improve your cornering and handling.

We suggest that you fit performance suspension and lower the car by 28mm - 39 mm. Larger drops require arch work - especially on models already equipped with motorsport suspension.

Alloy wheel upgrades.

The benefits of alloys include a lower unsprung weight and better brake cooling. Get a good track legal slick tyre to improve your handling and help improve traction on your Rexton. Large Rexton alloys can decrease performance. If you get big alloys you will be changing your final drive ratio.

Due to this we would advise sticking to a maximum wheel size of 16 inches, although we know some of our members have gone larger than this with no problems.
