Don't just look at the peak power figures, you need to see the whole torque curve when determining if a mod is right for you i40.

With our hints your i40 can be transformed into a track car and prove to be reliable daily driver.

Smaller engines do not provide much of a return in terms of power so start with a bigger engine. Engine swaps are a good option if you have a small engine size.

Engine tuning mods.

These are the modified mods are usually carried out by our members, decide how far you wish to go in your tuning project before you begin.

Getting the right performance mods for your planned usage of the car is essential. Stage 3 (competition) mods just don't work well on the road hard to control in slow traffic.

  • 2.0 L Nu i4 164hp/150hp
  • 2.0 L Nu GDI i4 176hp/162hp
  • 1.7 L U2 CRDI i4 diesel

Stage 1 modifications: Remap, Panel air filter, Suspension upgrade (drop 30-40mm), Lighter flywheel, Alloy wheels, Sports exhaust.

Stage 2 modifications: high flow fuel injector, Ported and polished head, Power/Sport clutch, Fast road cam, fuel pump upgrades.

Stage 3 modifications: Sports gearbox, Competition cam, Internal engine upgrades (pistons/head/valves), Adding or upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger), Engine balancing.

Peak power is good on competition cars but for a drivable and fun car you need a long power band and perhaps extending the rev range.

In this article we shall give a brief overview to the best modifications for your car, but we'd encourage you to spend some time on the site looking into the details of each type of performance upgrade.A fast road cam usually proves to be one of the best NASP power modifications you can do mechanically to your engine.

It improves the intake and exhaust flow and pushes up the power if done right. Ideally you'd add other mods and finish up with a performance chip. We'd also caution you not to go with a motor sport cam as this affects the engines idling and general town driving characteristics.

You will need to ensure that the engine is not starved of fuel so will need to increase the fuelling.

Using higher octane fuel is another option if you find you are suffering from pinking or premature ignition on your Hyundai project after fitting other uprated upgrades. Bigger injectors will enable you to supply sufficient fuel to the engine.

Uprate the fuel pump to cope with the extra fuel requirements of your tuned i40s uprated injectors.

Intake and Exhaust Tuning.

Breathing mods are usually next up. Induction kits are only beneficial to boost power if the cars air intake is struggling! Adding an induction kit to most small engines will see LITTLE LOW END POWER GAIN AT ALL. If you have heavily modified your engine and it's need for air INCREASES DRAMATICALLY then an induction kit is the answer and will help remove this restriction.

Maximum power gains come from a full induction kit with a cold air feed on heavily tuned engines, this can be sited within an air box but a panel filter should suffice for most applications. TorqueCars suggest you use a panel air filter as these are easy to clean and maintain and generally perform better than paper ones.

Sports exhausts can usually air flow from the engine but do not go too big or you may end up will reduce the flow rate. Stick to 1.5 to 2.5 inches as a rule of thumb.

Head work including a gas flow (ported and polished) and 3 or 5 angle valve job will really help to release the potential of the engine. Your clutch can slip as the power goes up if it starts to break and the standard clutches are only ever good for power gains of up to 40%. Fit an uprated clutch to avoid power leak through the transmission. The best mods we recommend for your i40 are fast road camshaft, remap, induction and exhaust, suspension.

Remaps offer phenomenal power gains on all turbo charged cars. On NASP engines the benefits are doubtful. However a remapped ECU on a NASP engine will help unleash the potential if you have done a lot of mods.

We've also seen some tuners toying with twincharging conversions and making some very high power hikes.

Despite the large cost involved adding forced induction to a NASP engine will give large power gains. Turbos are often harder to add than a supercharger. It is difficult to map fuelling with a turbo as the boost increases exponentially with revs.

It is more straightforward to map a supercharger because the boost is directly proportional to engine speed on a linear curve. To cope with forced induction you will usually need to decrease the engines compression ratio .

Handling/Suspension upgrades

Handling modifications are the thing most do first for the i40.

We found that most i40 factory suspension setups need tweaking, a few degrees of toe out -1-1.7, and a bit of negative camber will often enhance your cornering and handling.

Drop the car by as much as 25mm - 37 mm and fit uprated stiffer dampers, bigger drops will need other modifications in most instances.

Alloy wheel upgrades.

Due to the fact that alloy wheels are less heavy they improve performance and they can help to cool the brake disks. Get a good soft compound tyre to improve your handling and help improve traction on your i40. The drawback to large rims on your i40 is that you're altering your effective final drive ratio and this will have a detrimental effect on performance and acceleration.

Due to this we would advise sticking to a maximum wheel size of 18 inches, although we know some of our members have fitted larger wheels with no problems.
