VW BUGGY

Matt Thompsons LWB Supa Sports VW Buggy
In Sep 2000, Matt took control of this LWB Supa Sports VW Buggy. The Buggy was a standard 1968 floor pan; king pin, swing axle and a 1500cc SP VW which was in bits. Matt decided to go along with a Subaru engine and thus used a 1800 OHV Subaru.
John Sherman provided the adaptor plate for the motor, and disc conversion for the front. Matt then found a VW golf radiatior from a scrappy, and mounted it on the front torsion bars.
The next problem was steering...the original VW steering had no switch gear, so he opted to use the Gemini that was in his backyard. Then a custom 6point roll cage was fitted....just as well, because as you can see from the photos, Matt pulled off a stunner of a full roll.

The motor on the buggy is a 1600cc aircooled engine. He has had the crankshaft counterweighted and the flywheel lightened. The case is set up for full flow to a remote Oberg oil filter. The stock oil cooler is removed to run a remote cooler. Tim uses stock balanced rods and pistons with Total seal rings. The heads are cut for 9:5:1 compression so that he can pump gas or racing fuel. They are also ported to match intakes. Tim has to run a PICT - 30 carb that he's tweaked a little. The exhaust then exits throuh a 1 3/8" exhaust and supertrap muffler.
