Tuning the Volvo B6244FS

"Comprehensive guide to tuning the Volvo B6244FS engine!"

We are frequently getting posts inquiring about getting more power from the B6244FS and wanting to know what are the things we are recommending when it comes to B6244FS power upgrades. So let us look into Volvo B6244FS tuning mods and outline the best modifications on this great engine and point out some frequent tuning mistakes along the way.

The Volvo B6244FS are popular engines and with carefully picked performance enhancements like a remap, turbo improvements and camshafts you will noticeably increase your driving enjoyment.

Let us outline options for your B6244FS tuning and report on the best modifications for your car.

Just because particular upgrades are are common on B6244FS it doesn't mean its worth having, so we'll best upgrades that will give your B6244FS the best value for money to power increase.

Significant gains on the B6244FS can be made from camshaft upgrades. Altering the camshaft profile alters the intake and exhaust durations on the engine and can dramatically change the engines power and power output.

NB: Fast road cams normally increase the torque throughout the rpm range, you could drop a little bottom end power but the top end will be better.

Competition cams, increase the top end band but as a result the car will not idle smoothly and low end power nearly always suffers.

For a road car you need to optimize your torque band to your cars usage.

I'd be amazed if you have ever thought a B6244FS Race cam is a pleasure to live with when driving in heavy traffic.

Some B6244FS engines respond better to more aggressive camshaft durations so view each engine as unique.

The ECU mapping and injectors and fuel pump also will make differences on the torque gains you'll hit.

Altering valve durations can alter the torque band and on most engines the exhaust and intake durations do not need to match, although most cams and tuners use matched pairs there are some advantages to extending the intake or exhaust durations.

B6244FS Tuning Stages

Stage 1 B6244FS modifications: Intake headers, Sports exhaust manifold, Drilled & smoothed airbox, Fast road camshaft, Panel air filters, Remaps/piggy back ECU.

Stage 2 B6244FS modifications: Sports catalyst & performance exhaust, Fast road cam, Ported and polished head, induction kit, fuel pump upgrades, high flow fuel injectors.

Stage 3 B6244FS modifications: Twin charging conversions, Internal engine upgrades (head flowing porting/bigger valves), Competition cam, Crank and Piston upgrades to alter compression, Adding or Upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger), Engine balancing & blueprinting.

The B6244FS engines respond well to mods and thankfully there is a lot of upgrades and tuning parts about.

Mapping allows a tuner to unlock the full potential of all the parts you've done to your B6244FS.

It will usually give around 30% more power on turbocharged vehicles and you can expect to see around 15% on NASP engines, but your results may depend much on the parts you've applied and the condition of your engine.

Pulling more fuel and air into your B6244FS is the whole point to any engine modification task.

The intake plenum carry the air from the air cleaner and allow it to be sucked into the engine cylinders with fuel for the squish phase.

Structure and flow rate of the Intake headers can make a large effect on to fuel engine efficiency on the B6244FS.

I usually find plenum chambers are crying out for motorsport parts, although some OEM provide fairly well optimized plenum chambers.

Larger B6244FS valves, carrying out port matching and head flowing will also lift torque, and more importantly will allow you to get a better torque increase on other parts.

Turbo upgrades for the B6244FS

NASP engines need quite a lot of work when you add a turbo, so we have a separate guide to help you take into account the pros and cons of going this route on your B6244FS

The more air you can get into an engine, the more fuel it can burn and uprating the induction with a turbocharger upgrade makes significant power gains.

If your motor has forced induction upgrades are relatively easy and you'll see that turbo charged engines are made using strengthened components.

There are tuning limits for every engine, with some being very over engineered and some just sufficiently able to handle stock power

We recommend you find these limitations and install better pistons and crank to cope with the power.

There are many car owners spending a lot of money on turbo charger upgrades on the B6244FS only to experience the B6244FS catastrophically fail just after it's finished.

Large upgraded turbos commonly experience a bottom end lag, and little turbos spool up more quickly but won't have the top end bhp gains.

We are pleased that the choice of turbo chargers is always moving on and we commonly find variable vane turbo chargers, allowing the vane angle is altered according to speed to lower lag and increase top end torque.

Twin scroll turbo chargers divert the exhaust flow into a couple of channels and push these at differently profiled vanes in the turbocharger. They also increase the scavenging effect of the engine.

It is not unusual that there's a restriction in the air flow sensor (AFM/MAF/MAP) on the B6244FS when a lot more air is being fed into the engine.

We see 4 bar air sensors coping with quite large power gains, whereas the OEM air sensor limited bhp at a much lower level.

Adding a supercharger or additional turbo will make large power gains, although more complex to get working. We have this feature on twinchargers if you want to read more.

Uprating B6244FS fuel injectors

You will need to ensure that the engine is not starved of fuel so will need to pay attention to the fuelling when you start going beyond 20% of a power increase. It is important to be generous with your injectors flow rate.

The accepted safe increase is to add another 20% when specifying an injector, this takes into account injector deterioration and allows some spare capacity should the engine need more fuel.

We think this one is common sense, but you'll need to match your fuel injector to the type of fuel your car uses as well.

Best B6244FS performance exhausts

You may need to increase your exhaust if your exhaust is actually causing a restriction.

On most factory exhausts you'll find the exhaust flow rate is still good even on modest power gains, but when you start pushing up the power levels you will need to get a better flowing exhaust.

Do not go with the widest exhaust you can buy you'll slow up the exhaust flow rate - the best exhausts for power gains are usually between 1.5 to 2.5 inches. It is the shape and material more than the bore size.

Typically exhaust restrictions are traced to the catalyst and filters installed, so adding a higher flowing sports alternative will help avoid this restriction.

Problems and issues to look out for on the B6244FS

The B6244FS engines, if regularly serviced and maintained, are generally very reliable and have few issues.

Regular oil changes are vital on the B6244FS, particularly when the engine has been modified and is putting down more power than the manufacturer intended.
