It's not the power or torque that can be excessive - it's the controllability of the delivery of the stuff. If the accelerator is so hair trigger that a mere 1/4 ounce extra pressure lights up the tyres in top gear then perhaps is time to re-think the throttle response curve and re-program accordingly.

A re-think on the gearing wouldn't be a bad idea either.
 
Well yeah, that's true as well. If you have 800lbft (which is the sort of thing a remapped V10 Touraeg TDi might offer) then some traction management is a good idea as well.

Even my 2002 model year 406 was drive by wire and the accelerator pedal response curves could be adjusted at remap time via the ODB2 port.
