Volvo C70 Funny handbrake issue

Hello, I have a 2009 Volvo C70 2.0D SE
Here is a strange one for you

when I got the car the handbrake seemed like it came up a bit far, so I adjusted it via the cable tensioner bolt under the cup holders in the centre console. It now comes up about 3 clicks, sorted you may think.

Sometimes when I pull the handbrake up it just come up 3 clicks and is perfect. and sometimes it has a lot of travel and on hills dosent quite hold the car.

Diagnostics
I don't get any feedback through the foot peddle when braking so it cant be warped discs.

I do not have a drum / Disc combination brake on the rear so its not the linings coming away from the shoes. The handbrake cable connects straight to the calliper at the back. I checked this earlier today, picture attached.


There is plenty of meat on the discs and the pads back and front, no stepping or scoring, not that I would expect that to effect it intermittently.

Any ideas?

It is possible that your brake callipers are not releasing properly. I don't care how new your car is this is just a fact of life. Pop the car into a brake specialist and have the callipers checked that they are not seized. I once had this on my car which is a modified Saab and it took 20 minutes to diagnose the fault and 2 hours to correct the fault afterwards - marvellous

Its a 2009 and I have not owned it that long (about 4 months or so) so anything is possible. How does them not releasing properly effect applying the brake. I would have thought that it would effect the releasing of the brake.

No question is a silly one if you do not understand my friend

In my case the brake calliper was seized in the one spot so when you applied the hand brake it was not actually applying pressure to the disc because the movement was limited.
