hows it going lads. ive recently bought a 1.5 vtec-e 96 5door civic. i was looking to do a b16a conversion but was told that i mite as wel buy 1. thats not an option, does any 1 have a better sugestion in regards to different engine, or i could start tuning the 1.5 vtec-e engine e.g high lift cam, turbos e.t.c what would be you advice?

much appreciated. cheers.:embarrest::blink:;)

Hi and welcome. Are you doing the work yourself? We have one member who did a 2.2 conversion?

Alright mate, welcome to TorqueCars, and more importantly welcome to the Honda section!

If you insist on tuning your current engine then start with a cat-back exhaust and a de-cat. From there move on to a manifold (4-1). Cams, cold air intake and air filter all come next. From your current engine you will only be looking at a gain of about 20/30 bhp. My advice would be to go for the engine swap. I would personally go for a B18C from an Integra Type R. The USDM code is B18C5, the JDM code is B18C and I think we use the same code here in the UK. If you do go for it then you will need to upgrade your brakes and suspension to cope with the power. Any other questions feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer them.

The EG9 uses a B16 engine. The B16 is a 1.6. It's the same as the VTi we had in the UK and the SiR in America.

VTEC-E isn't like a normal VTEC engine either, it is designed for the VTEC to kick in at lower rpm (as in it was designed for drivers who don't like revving the **** out of their engine).

prince ya seem to no your stuff dudue cheers. ive got a friend who has a 2.2 vtec outa a prelude. what ya think? were would you get engine mounts and drive shafts for this?

change of plan going to go with the tuning. putting a turbo on ya got any advice. its got 116,000 miles was just going to get the head polished then fit the turbo, will this be ok or will it just blow the engine?

Thanks mate. I'm always happy to pass on any knowledge I have. I would avoid the 2.2 (H22) personally as it requires a lot more work than a B series conversion for roughly the same power. Although common, I would go for a B18 from an Integra Type R. Always remember though, any engine conversion will also need brake and suspension upgrades to match.

To be perfectly honest I don't think it's worth it. Because of the engine you have you'll have to have the turbo kicking in at high rpm. Better for a turbo to kick in at lower rpm and have the vtec kick in a high rpm. I also think the mileage on your car is far too high for a turbo. Not because it can't be done, but because once you fit a turbo you will then need specialist servicing. This will need to be done on a much more regular basis, and will cost more as well. I don't actually know a whole lot about turboing as I've never researched it. However, just bolting on a turbo isn't a good idea. Under your bonnet is likely to get very hot without an intercooler and you don't want the engine overheating.

Ultimately, it all depends on what you want from the car. If this is a daily drive then a turbo is not a good option. If this a track car then a turbo is a very good option.

i see what your saying. in your words it makes sense. i always just want a faster car now that im off the drink i just wanna put all my money into a car. mite start a progress post. whats the drive shaft and mounts like to get for the integra convo? is it true ya need the key and barrel 4 it too?

I've actually never looked into that one. But my assumption would be no. Your best bet now is to find yourself a garage that can source the engine, all the parts required and then fit it for you. Start doing this now. It took me over a year to find somewhere near me. Then whilst you're saving up start doing the suspension and the brakes.

Drive shafts will be needed, not sure about the mounts.

I know what you mean about the money. I haven't been out drinking for months now because I wanna get my Civic done. For whatever reason you chose to ditch it... All credit for concentrating on the car mate!
