Spark plug intervals

If you switch to platinum or iridium spark plugs can you leave them in longer without having to change them?

What is typically the life span of a set of plugs in an average engine?

I have a set of Iridium plugs which are alleged to be for life! These will be replaced every 18 months with the 2nd set due to be changed in February 2013.

60,000 miles is suggested for my car iusing iridium plugs. So far they've done 40,000 and no issues at all

they do last longer than standard and in high power turbo engines are close to compulsory.
