Is this remapping to do with reprogrammng ECU.
Do all cars have ECU's now? Can you connect to laptop
to see which gear you are running in ?
What shape / locations are they fitted under the bonnet ?

Yes it is to do with reprogramming the ECU. Most modern cars have an ECU, some have different names like MEMS and EMS but it is basically the same thing.

Modern cars with fuel injection have an ECU, older cars with carbs do not (although there are bound to be a few exceptions!)

They are sometimes inside the car near the fuse box but generally are in a plastic box to one side of the engine bay.

yes
remapping is changing the parameters of the standard file.
this is normally done through a diagnostic port somewhere in the car rather than through the ECU itself.

each ECU can show different live data ie i can see around 300 live data from my engine component alone - coolant temp, air intake temp, manifold pressure, MAF readings etc
some do allow gear info again depends on the ECU and the software used.

OBDII is most cars from 2000 + required by law in US from 1996
