Is it possible to Tune a carb? How is this done? Will I see much more power? If I got a bigger twin carb would I need to change or adjust anything else on the engine.

I heard something about needle sizes, idle screws and the like and just wondered how I go about improving the Carb to deliver more air and fuel to the engine. I want more power, not really that bothered about economy.

Twin 40s are meant to be quite good but will they fit on my engine?

Needle sizes only apply to variable venturi carbs such as SU, Stromberg and Zenith.

The Weber (DCOE) 40s are twin choke sidedraught carburettors of fixed venturi design so needles won't apply. 40 relates to the choke diameter, in this case 40mm. These will be too big for a 1.6 litre engine - you'll suffer from rough idle and severe flat spots.

In my opinion you'll get better and more repeatable results by tuning the fuel injection system optimally.

Carbs are more fun and i think more easy to play with. don't like fuel injection.

check googe , load up your details and ask the question , there is tonnes of material pertaining to your question but in a nut shell , your ingection system will be cheaper to tune , retain its balance & give far less trouble

most people dont like tuning carb'd engines, but i do! lol your not alone.

The Jets are what need drilling correctly (also known as needles, this is the case with most carbs, even a twin choke single weber)

Twin 40's are not too big for your engine, they just need to be jetted correctly, and set up properly on a rolling road. i know someone who ran twin 40's on his 1.3 mk2 jetta and that was awesome fun ! its all in the setup. problem is finding someone good to set everything up. injection engines are easy to tune, you plug em into a laptop an job done, due to that, a lot of tuners got lazy and so most now dont remember( or ever known0 how to tune a carb engine properly!

your local to me, and quite a few people i know round here have given me good reports on a few local specialists, so if you do go for it lemme know and i can send you in right direction!

for your engine, the easiest and cheapest route to better power is to fit a weber 32/34 dmtl carb, and a GTI head, cam, distributor, ex manifold and downpipe. get the weber set properly and that will take you to just shy of 100bhp easily, and the dreaded pierburg issues you no doubt have will be gone forever!

drop me a pm if you need any advice or help etc on tuning that engine, been there done that! mk2's are my thing and have my fair share of fun with em, any part you need i can generally get quickly and at decent prices too lol

Jet's are not needles, although they are sometimes coloquially (and incorrectly) referred to as such.
ive found that too, also there are many types of jet's. there is so much you can do with carb's id love to talk more about posts of intrest but it takes me years to type out so tend to keep them short.

also known as needles, i think it a bit of both.
