golf engine swap

I have just purchased an 01 golf gl. NA. nothing has ever been done to this car and it's stock. wheels, tires, everything, I'm teh second owner. anyway. I would like to get more hp out of this car and was curious what the best steps are going to be to boost it without going turbo.
I was thinking about a motor swap to an audi or a newer model golf. and possibly making the car all wheel drive. what are my options?

Buying a car that does what you want in the first place is usually more economical.

the audi engines are the same mate. the mk4 golf is a heavy car for its size so really the only decent engines in it are 1.8t, later 2.3 v5 (20 valve head) 2.8 or 3.2 v6


as for going 4 wheel drive its very expensive. you need to get a quattro a3 or TT and cut the rear end out of it and weld in to place on your golf. new fuel tank, rear axle, haldex controller gearbox etc

It's a shame Audi never used the V5 in its own cars.
