What do you see as the main down sides of run flat tyres?

I think they are too heavy and too expensive and for that reason alone I'd probably look to upgrade them to standard tyres. Would you bother swapping for non run flats and are there any other reasons you can think of for either justifying them or ditching them?

You'll have to change the rims as well to replace with 'normal' tyres.

I don't see the problem if they're standard fitment for the car - I've driven a few cars with OEm runflats and the ride and handling is fine for my purposes.

noise. no need to change the wheels. mate had them fitted to a rover 25 only thing needed was tire pressure monitor which was fitted to the inside of the wheel.
they werent replaced with more run flats when they needed changed

I know a lot of guys (with BMWs) that have changed the runflats for regular tyres. Some even swapping them for Falken 452s. The reasons being the noise and apparently being very uncomfortable. As PG said, there is no need to change the rim.

Run flats are extremely difficult to change because on the very strong walls.
The rims can be damaged if changed by the wrong fitter but as said before "runflat rims" will take normal tyres
