diesel diagnostics (pre 2004)???????

My engine warning light has come on on my Saab 2.2 diesel 2003. normally I would take the ecu fuse out for a while and replace it to reset the ecu but this time it has stayed on.... However the garages want £30 min just to plug in the ecu faultcode reader and tell me if there is a problem, however it seems I can buy the cable for under a tenner and get the software thrown in for obd. but I have just read that OBD only sterted on diesels from 2004. So what cable do I need or to diagnose the problem on this particular engine. Thank you

Try the gendan website, they usually know what cars can be read from.

It'll be an OBDII interface. The problem is that the OBDII standard has been agreed and ratified yet all makers suddenly add their own model unique codes the minute a standard is agreed upon.

This is standard practice and I don't understand the thinking behind it.
