What do you think the best engine is for a tuning project?

The Toyota 2JZ GTE is a monster, but the RB26DETT is also very tunable and strong.

Do you have a favoured engine to tune up? If you want to hit large power figures easily do you have any other recommendations of engine for the project?

Slight bias but the EJ20 in Imprezas is highly tunable. I've heard reports of close to 400bhp on stock internals. Though I would take that with a pinch of salt I have been in 350bhp Impreza with stock internals (bigger turbo, exhaust, remap).

I know nothing about them, but when I started reading about tuning cars the Escort RS Turbo kept popping up. I understand they were/are highly respected for their tunability.

The Cosworth YB & YBB engines are worth a mention, the basic block is configured to run a second array of injectors and with the right turbo you should see around 460bhp on the stock block!

I will start writing in depth guides for more engines as these seem to be quite popular, if you have any tips or comments to pass on they will be gratefully received and incorporated in the articles.

How many engines were based on the 4G block then?

To my knowledge they were 2 and 2,4 litres in different Mitsubishi's including utes and were also used in the early Hyundai Sonatas and were available at various times with single cam 8 and 16 valve heads, twin cam 16 V heads with small and big ports and the DASH 3 valve Dual Action Super Head that had 1 exhaust 2 inlets 1 small and 1 larger valve that only came into operation at app 1800rpm or so.

Nearly forgot to add that they were also came in "wide block" for RWD and "narrow block" for FWD and AWD cars.

The SR20DETT makes pretty good power and is used in lots of track projects from drift cars to motorsports.

Agreed BUT they have a poor valve train with the potential for the Y shape rockers to come adrift and cause damage.

The later NEO headed motors are a far better design as the individual rockers on a shaft.

Most of the S chassis drift cars here have had the SR motors replaced with RB's or 2 JZ's

another factor is surely cost ?
But if not really a problem then I think the car its going into is important,

If it is too small for a six then probably a cosworth engine but I have no idea how much one costs nowadays -(suspect quite a bit )
If you can get a six in then probably Id go Rb26 (hold hands up to being bias ) although with the recent GTRs big price hike they are hardly reasonable (a stock head on its own now costs £600-700)

Just a little mention for the unloved VW diesel engine. In its PD era the 2lt unit will handle 400+ HP quite nicely with mountains of torque and they're in plentiful supply due to recent events ;)
