Are spacers just for looks

I was wondering if wheel spacers are just for looks or do they actually have a performance benefit as well? Does it make much difference to handling and performance?

The difference in handling will be marginal, if noticable at all, unless you are fitting very wide ones. However, the change in the relationship between the vertical link and the wheel hub when fitting wide (over 25mm IMO) spacers could well make the handling worse and offset the possible improvement due to the wider track.

In my case the wheel spacers were required to make the wheel fit over the massive brake calipers! Had a full geometry set up done which ensured that all was well with the handling afterwards.

I believe I'll require 10mm spacers on the front to clear my Porsche calipers so in my case function>form. However, a lot of guys use them to make the wheel appear to a lower offset and attempt 'stance'.
