Hey. I recently passed my driving, and got a 1.6 8 valve astra as my first car. I've fitted an air induction kit, and one of those little performance chips things. I need to know what else i can do to improve performance without spending too much money. I'm kinda new to this aswell, so don't really know what i'm doing. Help!!

Hi - welcome to the site. I wouldn't mind betting that the mods you have done have actually made the car slower? :( Tell us a little more about the chip. I normally recommend a panel air filter for these cars - do you have a cold air feed pipe - see main article on induction on www.torquecars.co.uk for more information on this.

A new fast road camshaft will lift performance a little more, the mark IV's are quite heavy cars so if you can lose some weight on the car this will help. Sports back box will make the car a little more fun to drive. Nitrous is another mod that is fairly easy to do but will give silly performance.

The FSE power boost valves will improve your throttle response and make the car feel quicker. About £80 + fitting at your local garage.

HI Russi666. I started out with just the 1.3 - what year is yours? Teh insurance was pretty high.

I'm not sure, the car feels about the same speed really. The air filter is just one of them standard ones that replace the airbox. The chip is just a resistor that goes into the IAT sensor thingy. Will all garages fit FSE power boost valves, or do I have to go to a specialist? How much we talking for a camshaft? My priorty atm is wheels. Getting some 17s nxt saturday. So far I've fitted lexus lights to the rear, SRi headlights, cd/dvdplayer, smoked side repeaters, and a silver centre console. getting chrome door handles from the scrappy on monday. oh, that performance chip fell out btw!!! Had to plug the old wire in coz my car just went completely dead!

Oh, and its on a 98 plate. S reg. The insurance is only 995, 3rd party fire n theft, which isnt too bad as some of my mates are paying like £1500 for a 1.1 old model micra, only 3rd party.

Sounds nice - if you have any pics - pM me and i'll put them in the gallery for you.

We all really hate the IAT sensor resitors here - they seem to add no power and cause more trouble than they are worth. Most garages can fit the FSE - they just need to measure the existing fuel line pressure and make sure the new is within 1 bar of this. A simple twist of the top nut adjusts the pressure - so if you have problems - untwist the nut a little. Camshafts are about £60-80 each with fitting taking a couple of hours on most engines by a competant mechanic.

Thanks for the tips. any ideas where i'll get a camshaft from? looked on ebay and all i can find is the standard ones. I'll send ya a couple of pics wen i get ma wheels fitted, which hopefully should be this weekend.

Piper and Kent Cams are good places to start - some even offer a regrind service but you need to make sure they provide the same LIFT after the grind.
