Hi Everyone

Just joined to the forum. I want to dig deep into the how to remap your own car category,
and would like to get some advice where to start.
I mean: books, what programs to use and any general advise.

Thanks

Fifo

Greetings and welcome to our TorqueCars forum :)

Unless you have been trained to remap an engine properly, it can and will end in tears if attempted by an amateur. If you do not have a tuning company in Hungary that can remap you're car safely, then other companies in other countries can help. Many supply a preloaded map on a gadget that you plug into the OBD2 port and then simply upload it.

I`m living in the UK since a few years so companies are not a problem.
My one is 1997 740i 4.4 .. so ive been told that my ecu is too old to remap due to OBD port etc.
So im only left with a chip tuning option (pay £120, post ecu, receive ecu) which am afraid to do. (not trusting in other people soldering techniques :) ) and all this to gain 18HP.
In the other hand, I am an IT programmer and not afraid to learn new stuff.
mixing that together, I thought it would be nice to change the air intake, camshaft, exhaust and if am lucky enough, there is a possibility to copy my ecu parameters into 2001 models ecu which supposed to be the same hardware (bosch whatever it is)
but i might be wrong.

I speak from reading the experiences of others who had similar ideas buddy. Bang was the end result and coincidentally one of them was in IT and said the same thing. I assume 18bhp was without taking into account any hardware upgrades? There are forums that you can seek that will confirm the compatibility of the later ECU for remap purposes.

Just to make it clear, i would not touch my ecu`s maps without knowing everything how to do.
copying file from and to it... yes.. thats not that hard. its just i want something uniqe. So having the same chip tuning that anyone can buy is just too easy to do.
Yes, 18HP with only ecu remap, nothing else. all stock car.
Any tipp regarding to books I can read about tuning ?

In a word 'no' I get the tuning done on my own chariot by professionals with impeccable credentials. You could try waiting for a bit longer and maybe one of our esteemed colleagues on here might know of a book or two that could help you. Failing that, try a Google search asking for tuning books on BMW 740i for 1997, you might be lucky. In the meantime you could approach these people: http://www.simpsonmotorsport.co.uk/

Just because you are an expert in your field of IT doesn't make you equally qualified to tinker with the tuning of a highly stressed turbo charged performance motor.

I am in the dark as to the tune ability of the factory ECU so maybe an aftermarket EMS like a Haltec or Motec may be a better way to go to achieve your power goals.

Just my 2 cents worth.:)

@Fifo Im guessing you have an E38 or E65 4.4 normaly aspirated engine and not turbo charged at all if the quoted gains from tuners are as low as 18bhp. I would do a little reading and research as the guys above have already said but usually the first and best place to start on a none turbo charged engine is with the breathing of the engine, So exhaust de restriction and adding better air intake etc. The more air you get into the car the more fuel you can add and the bigger bang you get and more power:woot:
Sounds simple enough but its far from simple.;)

Very true TCJBOLDIE, Especially on a car as heavy as that is. Its going to take quite a lot of pulling to bits and tinkering to notice a difference tbh:woot:

Hello and welcome, enjoy the site. I'm a regular and I've learned loads from these guys. It's also a really friendly forum, much better than other that I've joined.

The M62 is a fairly good engine, now if I'm right, your's will be a late E38, and I presume an auto. I wouldn't try and get too much extra out of the engine if it is an auto as you'll likely kill off the box, BMW auto boxes in my experience with them tend to be the weak link (in the older ones anyway) There are a lot of companies out there who specialise in BMW work, and I'm sure there is one who will be able to help with the mapping. I was told my ECU was too old to be live mapped, then found a company that sell a chip you can put in place of the standard one that allows live mapping, so keep looking.

PS mods or admin, if it's ok I'd like to post a couple of links to places that sell BMW upgrade parts for OP to have a look at....
