Would you use a main dealer for a major service, go to a local garage or just do it yourself?

How old does a car need to be before the service book is no longer expected to have a full dealer stamp in it? Does it really matter? Would you buy a newish car if it didn't have a full main dealer service history?

you would hope a main dealer and local garages are not that different both have trained mechanics, it wouldnt bother me if it wasnt main dealer as long as there are stamps in the book

Bit of both. My local indy garage has vag master trained technicians and I trust them, but smaller jobs I can do myself. Would do more if I had more time, tools and inclination. Very rarely go to the dealers.

Local specialist, although ill need to see what theyre experience is on the CR engine. skoda shocked me by their prices, cheaper than i thought.

smaller intermediate services ill do myself

That said the Audi prices are not too bad either, my usual garage quote similar figures when I ask for Audi parts!

Most of the time do it my self, bigger jobs will have to go to a trained mechanic, as they have the right tools for the job! I don't think we have ever taken a car to a dealer.

I tend to do most stuff myself,if i cant do it i have 2 sons who are mechanics,if they,re not sure Conceptua tunning are more than helpfull.Stuff the main dealer they wanted £475 to fit a window motor in our r33 when we had it,i dread to think what they would charge for a service !!!!.

I haven't used a main dealer in years. For technical stuff where special tools are needed and too costly to buy or not available to rent I use a specialist who is mobile and very very good. The only time I have used a dealer was for the first 1000 mile check and recalls.

My car has been serviced annually by the main dealer, until recently that is :embarrest: Now that Saab are in-between potential owners, I shall have to get the old girl serviced by the independent that does all of the high performance work. Not a problem as they are more than capable, just wanted to keep a main dealer service stamp right through my service history book.
