What is a compression test? A compression test can be a very useful tool in checking the overall health of your engine. In particular the pistons, bores, rings, valves, head gasket and even camshaft can all cause lower (or higher) than normal compression. It basically tests how well the cylinders hold compression. What results should I be seeing? It is widely accepted that an engine in good condition should have all cylinders within 10% of each other and have compression as close to or within the specified range for that vehicle. Any different and chances are there's a problem. I will cover this later. How do I carry out the test? 1. First of all you need a compression tester. You can pick these up fairly cheaply (usually less...
Already in my project thread but not easy to find in nearly 100 posts. 1. Take an old bike inner tube and cut the a foot long or so section off it including the valve. Length will depend on where you rad inlets and outlets are. 2. Fill your radiator with water and block up any sensor holes etc. Jubilee clip each end of the inner tube to the inlet and outlet of the rad like so. 3. Attach a bike/car/whatever tyre pump to the valve on the inner tube. 4. Pump full of air and look out for any leaks!
If you do this properly it will look Cool  Things you will need: 1. Carbon Fiber wrap (cheap enough off eBAY) 2. Sharp precision knives 3. Hair Dryer 4. Thick cardboard - so you don't cut into the table 5. Thin cardboard - to make a template 6. TIME - Lots of ;) First find a piece of your car / item to wrap - give it a good clean with a tiny bit of washing up liquid - make sure it's completely dry, so the carbon can stick properly. Make sure you have lots of time for any item you want to do - if you rush this - it WILL look rubbish, which defeats the object of doing it. I'll show you how i wrapped my Cars remote fob... Chose the right blade - smallest the better Cut the Carbon down...
Angel eyes car headlights are circural-shaped rings that that when light up give the agresive look to your car. They can be of diferent colour-white is the most comon colour, but blue and red are also very good.Home made ones are much cheaper than buying new ones, but it is not easy at all to make them. The proces involves heating, cutting, drilling, electrical wiring, patience, efford and time. They also wont look just like new ones, the rings wont be illuminated corectly-the bottom of the ring will be less illuminated than ends where the diods are. For the ring itself its best to use clear acrylic/plastic rod.The best is hex-shaped rod but square would be fine to.You also need to make multiple cuts(scratches along the bottom side of the the...
OK heres a quick guide to changing a wheel Tools Required Jack preferable Hydraulic one Socket most common sizes 17,19,21. Better than the wheel wrench in the boot Torque Wrench and setting ( should be in the handbook ) Remove access to wheel nuts if required Loosen, DON’T remove the wheel nuts Jack the car up using the jacking points, reinforced sections Place the spare wheel under the sill or use an axle stand NEVER CLIMB UNDER A CAR SUPPORTED ONLY BY A JACK, IF ACCESS UNDER THE CAR IS REQUIRED SUPPORT IT USING AXLE STANDS Remove the nuts carefully Remove the wheel If you have any fit some copperslip to the hub, or the back of the wheel. This will help to remove the wheels at a later date Line up the new...
This is just a brief guide to brake pad removal and refitment (of new ones), this is done on an Impreza so rear calipers as well, not drums (when I replace the handbrake drum shoes will post this up but not a current plan). They are held in by pins which understand most modern cars are so should be suitable for others – not sure about Ford and Vauxhall, the older ones (escorts, novas etc….) definitely had to remove, or pivot up, the calipers to replace brake pads but not sure about newer models. In any case hope the below helps some (and apologies for the few photos). Required tools: Hammer (yes really v important) Pair of regular pliers 2 screwdrivers Broken screw bit or flat nail Bar Junior G clamp Tin of copper ease Small...
This is a very quick guide to fitting an amp into your car. Right first of all you'll need a set of screw drivers, some spanners, maybe some connection blocks, maybe some silicone and a selection of connectors. First job is to lay the wires. So the + cable goes from the + terminal on the battery to the + terminal on the Amp. Start under the bonnet. Remove the inline fuse (Always buy power + cable's with an inline fuse) Lay the + cable next to the battery terminal so it can reach. But don't connect it yet. Now find a suitable place for the wire to pass through the bulkhead. You should be able to find wires already going through so just cut the rubber and post your cable all the way through and silicone round it when finished...
Ok, so i changed my pads after a very needed change, was left late as i get one day off a week and some theives stole my pads from the box in car, so had to wait another week to get it done. Ok, Step 1: Get car on a flat smooth surface gravel is not advised as jack could slip, undo wheel nuts slightly and jack up on relevent jacking point under car Step 2: Loosen and remove bolts from wheel in a criss cross formation. Step 3: Put removed wheel under suspension and disks for added security. Step 4: Next turn steering wheel so the back of the caliper is more visible Step 5: Loosen & remove bolt from rear of caliper (some cars you may have to loosen top one too) Step 6: On my pug they reccomend changing the bolt. Step 7...
We get asked this question quite a lot so here is an introduction thread to cover the basics of adding a turbo. Feel free to add your suggestions and pointers below. (THIS THREAD IS NOT FOR QUESTIONS. They will be moved to their own thread.) 1) Please read these articles http://www.torquecars.com/tuning/adding-turbo.php https://www.torquecars.com/forums/threads/fitting-a-turbo-some-dos-and-dont-s.24176/ 2) Adding a turbo is expensive and costly. Expect to pay around £3000 upwards for a turbo conversion. 3) Internal engine modificiations are required in pretty much every case as the high compression ratios of a NASP engine will result in detonation. The idea of the internal engine mods are twofold. a) It strengthens the parts that...
If anyone is a visual learner my YouTube channel may help you out. It's all DIY style videos about my various car projects. I have 3 older bimmers that I tinker with passionately. I decided to start the channel as a way to document what I'm doing to the car and to build a network of ppl who can learn from my projects and also help me with advice and or opinions. A forum of sorts. Hopefully some of u will stop by a watch a few of my vids. Thanks.
Yaris 2008 1.5L 3D – how to make a driver’s seat foldable? Hi Guys I’ve got Yaris 2008 1.5L 3D, USA standards, left steer wheel. it’s a nice and smart car, I test its character in Russian winter conditions these days and first results are quite acceptable ( without comparison to my another pet - 3.0L 4X4 Outlander XL). There is quite a problem resulting from its 3-door feature – driver’s seat is not foldable, so you have to make some acrobatic movements to put something on rear seat. It is also very uncomfortable to get a passenger from right side only. I understand that the reason is safety and accept it – generally. But it could be nice and sage in Mariland state but not in my case. Quite often you got a passenger from a...
Alrighty then.... Ive done a fair bit of spraying but nothing fancy, but was gonna have a stab at the mpv as it needs to be smartended up and needs the extra protection. Trying to keep this short, i want to deal with all the minor rust thats appearing. The final goal though is to wrap the vehicle for business use. So before I burn cash wrapping bad pannels i wanted to get them keen and protected from future probs. A mazda mpv 2003 from the factory would be sprayed with water based colour paint, but a thinner based top coat, is that correct? Is there any chance I could key the affected areas, spray using a solvent based 2k paint a holding coat, build it up and then flat it. Give it a month or so, then it could be wrapped...
There comes a time when every paint job has reached the end of its natural life. Assuming you care about these kinds of things, what do you do? Wrap it or paint it? When it comes down to it your costs will be about even so it’s really a question of preference. If you’re looking a truly unique pattern or finish (like the sticker bomb wrap above) then wrapping s the way to go but nothing beats paint for durability. So, lay or spray? Weigh in here and we’ll let you know the results next week.
Where do you start looking when a car wont start? I thought it would be handy to have a thread to help people diagnose non starting faults. Post up your experiences here and what faults you have encountered and how to tell if that is the case next time. 1) Check you have fuel. (Seriously, don't assume you have. Lots of people call out the breakdown people to discover that they are out of fuel.) 2) Just a click could indicate a knackered servo in the starter motor. If there is no click then apply a fuse protected current to the +ve starter terminal to see if it goes. 3) Turning over engine that refuses to fire is either a fuel or electric problem (no spark). Where do you start tracking these ones down? Other problems that could...
I was just wondering whether there is anyone who has done vinyl window tint them selves. Ive watched videos on youtube but when ive asked people they say it isnt good the best way ive found is to cut it using the outside of the window, spray the vinyl and window with water during application so you can slide it into place then remove the water so it sticks Any adivice would be good Nice one
Hi there, i have a mitsubishi galant 2.5 v6 2002 modle non turbo, i was wondering as i am deffo going to do it where would i get a twin turbo from, would one from a vr4 galant modle fit it? and what would i have to do to the engine and everything else to make sure i dont Mess my engine up as i have read some articals about water pumps and the amount of air i can have in the engine but i am looking for the most amount of power i can get out of my v6 engine with a twin turbo without messsing my car up. i have herd i would need bigger valves and bore out the cylinders and get bigger pistons to compensate for it, but what else?????
Hello guys, I have bought a BMW 728i 1996, around 220 000 km. I was thinking to increase the horse power / torque on this engine. What is the best thing i can do? installing a new, modified cpu or changing the sparkplugs / fuel pump or any other idea's ? I'm verry interested! If you perhaps have a repair manual or techical info about this car i would be gratefull! Greets, Spillie :)
My 95 Cavalier is making a pop noise when i turn the wheel all the way. Rotate completely right, it stops; give another turn, just a little, and there's a loud grinding POP! Rotate back until it stops, then right again, no problem. Rotate all the way left, then another shove, POP! Rotate right, then back left, no problem. Rotate all the way right, POP! What's going on here? I'm thinking CV joints, I've been told it could be struts. I've considered just replacing the drive shafts.
i'm trying to remove a dent on my door - i think caused by a kick imagine if you kicked hard with the sole of your foot against the right hand end of the door handle. the result is like a crater where one end of the door handle has pushed the panel in. pulling on the handle has popped out 2/3rds of the problem. the rest is a) against the handle and b) on a panel angle/crease so one of the domestic suction cup things could not get a seal (if they ever work, they wont on this one) the torque cars article talks about an m shaped dent puller. searching on the web i'm just wading through hundreds of suction cups - anyone give me advice on whether the hot glue and m shape could remove my type of dent, and where/by what name i can get...
Hi everyone I've decided I want to give it a go at putting a SR20 engine into a Nissan Micra. I found the engine haven't got the car yet looking for 'the one'. The only thing i'm not sure on other than fitting it in is which gear box to use. I'm trying to do this on a strict budget and hopefully mak4 it into a tread once done.
Re: Ideas for basic guides - what you want to see in this section I would like to see some advise on safety procedures, just basic stuff like jacking up AND supporting cars on proper axle stands, the wearing of safety goggles and gloves when welding/grinding and suitable clothing, seems daft but just today I saw in the press a young girl had been killed when her scarf got caught in the drivetrain of a gokart she was driving..... . . .not a nice way to go and a sad loss of a young life. I speak from experience guys, after 30 years in the trade 3 visits to casualty to have metal removed from my eyes and once for a slip with an angle grinder and unbeleivably recently I managed to chop the top off one of my fingers, luckily its grown back...
Hi, i have a 1997 900 saab that i have owned from new, recently the reverse gear is gifficult to engage, i can get in gear by applying the hand break, putting into 1 st gear and attempting to move forwards, this dipps the rear of the car oand reverse can then be selected. any ideas on what could be wrong. ps the car has only covered 60 k cheers kev
hi i have recently got myself a polo clssic 1.6 and on inspecting the engine bay have spied some devious little rust spots staring to appear on the top of the suspesion mount i think... anyhoo what advice can people give to remedying this problem as there is little to no space to get paintbrush betwix shock and bodywork externally and if i only treat the top then the problem will be more likely to occur,, especially as i have to drive 30 miles across moors evryday before 6 am so daresay im going to encounter a little bit of roadsalt!! cheers ppl
Firstly I've never done this before, I was starting to do it then got lazy and just got them powder coated from a company lol here's a rough guide so you know roughly how it works and if I miss or do anything wrong, just point it out :P Thanks Firstly remove the wheels from the car: I wouldn't Advise on doing it on Stone chips but these have been very hard packed into the ground but do it with care! You'll need some Supply's which you should have gotten first but hey I always do things the hard way :P Some 60 & 120 Sand paper, some Cheap primer and Alloy Wheel Primer and (Colour of your choice) Black Gloss and some Laguaer. Now have the tyres removed from the Wheels unless your only wanting to do the face of the alloys...
Met one of your guys today at BHP performance show, although I've forgotten your name, sorry. A bit about me I'm 21 and from London and drive a Satin Black Renault Megane, any questions feel free to ask Start of witha practice spray - a wing is good. Build up the paint in layers. I used about 15 spray tins of paint in the end I belive When it comes to removing the bumper it would depend on the car, I discovered that after removing all of mine, I didnt need to but for some cars, you would need to, I removed the bumpers, the bonnet and the front two wings, and then masked up everything else, when I done the car I didn't need to do any paint prep as the paintwork was only 3 years old, so I knew it was in perfect...
Hello. I am a technical school student. My objective is all electric on the car. It would be an interesting to learn how to tweak PCMs, since I see several practical uses for the knowledge. People use it in areas from car theft to tuning and engine redesigning. Is there any way I can learn what programming goes into PCMs and any method I can make my PC communicate with it? How to program it. If I want to tweak a PCM of, let's say an 07 Honda Civic, where do I go look for resources? Are PCMs programmed in Assembly? Thank you.
Hi All, I have a 98 Landrover Discovery, the bonnet has the letters missing, the laquer has started pealing and it generaly looks a mess, I also have some scratches to repair on the rear pannels. My questions are:- do I repair a section of the bonnet or respray the whole thing when respraying the rear pannels, well same question really, do I do the top half (that has the scratches on) or the whole thing, the scratches are where someone have gone down with a key so I cant just pen them out, i tried and it looks a real mess, it needs properly respraying. I have been quoted £250.00 from a garage to do the work but I can get the paint mixed cheaper (far cheaper) and try and do the work my-self. I already have a compressor, spray...
hi, my plan for my 240sx was to put an rb20det engine in it, which costs like around 1300 i think to order, but a friend of my dad sais he ordered a ka24de from japan, and japan did engine work to it, it is not turbocharged its only dual head cams and electronicaly fuel injected, naturaly aspirated, like i said he had them do work to it and my dad said that he thinks his friend said it puts out around 300hp, this seems impractical to me considering it is not turbocharged and the stock engine comes with around 150hp??? he said he would sell it to me for 6 or 700$, it would really take the hassle of ordering an engine and shipping and stuff, but i just wanna know if it is possible to get 300hp from a KA24de naturaly aspirated...
I want to remove my current tank as im caring too much fuel on track. My question is what do i need, Do i need a tank with swirl pot? Or can i use a foam filled tank as im trying to eliminate fuel sloshing about. Ive no idea when it comes to this im allowed an aftermarket set up and will use a tank with approx 12 litres. Looking at one like this ** Removed URL as per our T&C's** Any information much welcomed on this thanks. Car is 1.6i.
My original blog post which has images. I finally finished replacing the clutch cable on my brothers pug106, it's not technically difficult just incredibly fiddly but still best done as a two man job to keep up morale as it took us 4 days. The worst thing is the Haynes manual only considers it a one spanner/novice job! Some people have had luck in doing this in 5 minutes some took hours and many clutch cables. Here's some information and a guide which might make the process easier for you... The clutch is basically a disc which in the default state is pressed up against the engine flywheel by strong springs, when you put your foot on the clutch it pivots and pulls the clutch cable up and this moves the clutch release lever and moves...

ok ive looked into painting my lower valances to visually lower the car. So for a practice i decided to paint some of the underbonnet parts so engine cover battery cover and top fuse cover all done. started small and worked up 1st the fuse cover ( center section of the battery cover ) sorta screwed this up with to thick a coats of primer it started to run then the battery cover. starting to look a bit better lastly the engine cover think i did a good job of this all 3 got 3 coats of black primer 4 coats of vw reflex siver paint then around 10 layers of clear coat. this was my mistake i should have used proper lacquer but i had the clear coat in the cupboard from painting something else. the heat from the engine has added a...

Hi All, I would like to get views people have on the up keep of Polished Alloy wheels (non painted or lacquered) as I have recently had my wheels refurbished and had the Rim stripped of the lacquer and paint I currently clean the wheels almost every day with soapy water then a good metal polish like Maguires Alloy Polish, I find that if I don't clean the at the end of every day the are quite hard to clean as they suffer from water staining if left for a couple of days, do many of you have "Polished Alloys" and if so how often do you clean them?
Preparation is the most important part in any paintwork. Whatever is between the part and the paint (i.e. chips, scratches, grease etc.) will show through the layers of paint. That said, some colours are more forgiving than others. Ok, first things first, you’ll need: ~ Time. I can’t stress enough how important it is not to rush things. ~ Paint, this will no doubt be in aerosol form. You will need some plastic primer (also known as adhesion promoter), basecoat (you can use normal car paint) in whichever colour you wish to paint and some lacquer (gloss or matt, it’s your decision.) ~ Something to ‘key’ the part. In the trade we call it scotchbrite, it’s basically a rough pad used to remove the shine from a panel, and it leaves...
Hi. Ive been lookin at getting some plastic corrugated conduit piping to cover the pipes and cables in my engine bay, only i cannot find anywhere or anyone that sells any. Ive tried places like City Electical Factors, Bennets, Links, B&Q, Charlies, Wickes but no luck. This is the kinda thing i want...in blue tho: http://www.adtechnologies.com/images/Catalog%20Photos%20031.gif If anyone knows of of anywhere i can get some, if you could let me know, that would be great, Thanks
ok, so got my old silver rims because my car tread is getting seriously low, but i have always liked silver n black so i decided to paint them pearlescent black i bought grey primer aswell got a few pics i dulled the laquer on before and sanded 80 180 400 1000 then 1500 grit sandpaper took a while but well worth the effort ! This is why 90 mph emergency stop didnt do this tyre anygood.
Hello Ive a 407 2.0Hdi which just got absolutely coverd in bird dropping over last summer when I was away... now the paintwork is burnt with many flat dull blemishes. I spoke to one spray shop about repairs and was told as its a peugeot it would need a complete respray of the effect panels which is most of them... I cant beliebe that just because its a peugeot I need a full spray, he also allided to Tcut etc just making it worse... Any ideas or advice....

Hi guys, I’m here to get some advice to buy a 1967 Mustang. My cousin owns a Mustang 1967 model and I got a chance to ride it. It was an awesome experience and from then I really want to buy one. However, I’ve been thinking of getting an old one and I even discussed with my cousin to know more about it. But I got to know that it is very difficult to buy an old car. Hence, I searched online and found some tips that should be considered before buying an old model (http://www.serviceplus416.com/maintenance-tips/the-ultimate-guide-to-buying-a-classic-car/) when I searched online. Do I need to consider anything else? Please share your experience. Thanks.

I have a video on the web of how to upgrade your front disc brakes and rotors on a 00 Mitsu Galant. This video can also be used as a general how to for any car. If there is anything that you think should also be done feel free to comment. (Video is in two parts on you tube) Video 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9dPfXHWvHo Video two http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ly4ScbY8rwM
I'm considering doing something called a "Porsche Kit" in a few years, when I have more money and possibly a garage or house (yeah, I can rent a garage... $80/mo, I gotta convince landlord to let me install a $2000 9000lb lift, maybe I can sell it to them). I've heard of such a thing. I can't find one. Also, skip the engine. I want diesel. Yes I am a diesel whore. I've been googling around but it's like... hard. I see things about kit cars, but no "BUY CAR KITS" except the lotus. Am I missing it? "Kit car" and "Car kit" are crappy terms for searching. Just something to do down the line, should be fun. If no kits, I can one-off one from spare parts :\
Hi all, in my Corsa 1.2, the indicator is showing an irregular pattern, i have done the standard stuff EG. walk around the car to see if any of the bulbs have burnt out. But all the indicator bulbs are on and fine, i have also tried the hazard lights and they have there normal flashing pattern so its just the indicators (left), could it be a relay of some sorts? Thanks
I'm modifying an '88 Z31 for speed, but I'm confused. My process begins with the exhaust, intake, boost controller, and now... I/C. I don't want to spend a lot of money on a I/C kit but don't have to tools to make my own, or the time to be that creative. I found this kit.... http://www.cmperformanceexhaust.com/online-store/z31-intercooler-kit/z31-i-c-kit-01?pop=0 and this one..... http://www.cmperformanceexhaust.com/online-store/z31-intercooler-kit/z31-i-c-kit-02 Idk, why the first kit is so much cheaper. Also, is it a full kit? Lastly, I was planning on getting a manual boost controller, how does this play out with the BOV? I found this kit...
Hello everybody, Just thougt I'd share a recent innovations votive solution for an in car iPad mount. Or any other tablet for that matter... The problem: 90% of us who use or even own a tablet tend to keep it in a protectve cover, yet manufacturers of 'in car' mounts seem to have overlooked this and only supply holders that fit the iPad by clipping into place in the it the protect be case. For anybody who spends time on the road and uses their iPad as a sat nav (as I do) this means swapping cases constantly, which is a complete waste of time! The solution: This is what I did with my Jaguar, but this could be utilised for many other types of car with very little modification (if any), do so at your own risk, I am simply sharing what...
Dont waste gbp125-150 per front caliper and be off the road for 4 working days, while waiting for the refurbished ones, when they start sticking (as they surely will because all Impreza's seem prone to this). you can buy a replacement rubber kit from the main delaer for gbp30 that does both sides. Depending on how bad they are, and mine were bad, takes about 2-3hours per side. Would have put up a guide on how to change them but doing it in zero degrees, outside, with flakes of snow falling didnt prompt me to stop and get out the camera. just makes sure the pots are very clean before you put them back in and ONLY if they have small pits of rust on them clean them off LIGHTLY with a bit of 1200 paper, nothing more harsh or you...
I posted up a question about how many could change a wheel which is something i think is very basic and everyone should know how to do this. what this thread is for is ideas for other guides such as checking / changing oil checking / changing sparks basic guide to change pads and discs basic wiring for stereos basic wiring for additional lighting we already have an MOT checklist so this is something that could added. does anybody have any other ideas or even their own guide to how to do anything? must be their own so not to infringe anybody elses work This will remain a sticky for one week (until 14th) so all members can find it easy if you get it by inspiration
In the process of restoring my Corvair I discovered and wrote up a paper on the restoration of Stainless and Aluminum trim. I'll be using the same on my Dauphine. What is nice about stainless is that it is almost indestructible. It is relatively easy to take really damaged pieces or scratched pieces and make them like new. You can download the pdf here:http://www.widman.biz/Corvair/English/Links/Polishing.html This is how my windshield trim turned out: It actually started out like this: The rear trim started like this And ended like this Aluminum is softer, and has to have the anodizing removed first (but that is easy too). Here is a headlight bezel before: And after Hope this helps. Sure is cheaper than replacements...
Following some shocking examples of car control and road sense in my area and as requested by HDI fun here is a guide on how to drive. If you know how to drive then you probably needn't bother reading this. Controls. A car has 4 main controls. The steering wheel is the round thing in front of you. In some cars it may have a flat bottom but generally it is round. When you turn this to the right the car goes to the right, the more you turn it the more right you go. Then we have the pedals conveniently arranged in reverse alphabetical order so we can remember them. Clutch, Brake and Accelerator. The clutch is used to stop a crunching noise from happening when you change the gear. Press the cluctch just before you move the...
