A nice wide torque band and sweet spot of peak power at one third of your RPM range is optimum.

Keep the car looking standard but take off the badges for the ultimate sleeper!

Sadly with smaller engine sizes you are wasting your time spending money on modifications, so if this applies to you get yourself an engine swap then apply the following mods.

Engine Tuning.

This list of the stages and motorsport upgrades are usually fitted by our members, decide how far you wish to go in your tuning project before you get going.

Getting the best sports modifications for your planned usage of the car is vital. Stage 3 competition upgrades just don't work well on the road hard to control in slow traffic.

Guide to the Best Tuning Mods & Upgrades

  1. Mods that Remove a Restriction

If the intake or exhaust are restricted in any way this will have an impact on your cars performance, so use an induction kit/filter upgrade and better flowing exhaust whenever your tuning creates a flow restriction.

  2. Mods that Improve Handling

Braking, Suspension and general alignment of the suspension components is vital for any tuning project even before you start increasing power.

  3. Fit Stronger Parts

Tuned cars will show up weaknesses, typically in the turbochargers, clutch and internal engine components. Whilst most engines can cope with mild tuning mods, TorqueCars recommend that you upgrade the internal components before these weak spots manifest themselves.

  4. ECU Tunes & Remapping

While some cars can be easily remapped, others may require piggyback ECU's or aftermarket ECU's but this is the most vital step of your tuning project as it fully releases the power from all of your mods and upgrades. Expect 10-20% on NASP engines and 30-40% on turbocharged units.

  5. More Power Needs More Fuel & Air

Every tuning project will aim to increase the air supply, but fuel supply is just as vital and will need to match the air the engine can utilise. Fuel to Air ratio is vital so upgrade the fuel pump & injectors. Also you can look to perform head mods (flowing and porting), bigger valves, fast road cams and forced induction upgrades to improve fuel.

Stages of Tune

Stage 1 mods: Lighter flywheel, Remap, Sports exhaust, Panel air filter, Suspension upgrade (drop 30-40mm), Alloy wheels.

Stage 2 mods: Power/Sport clutch, Ported and polished head, fuel pump upgrades, Fast road cam, high flow fuel injector.

Stage 3 mods: Sports gearbox, Adding or upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger), Competition cam, Engine balancing, Internal engine upgrades (pistons/head/valves).

Peak power is nice in motorsport but for a daily driven car you need a long power band and perhaps extending the rev range.

The point of our hints is to give a limited introduction of modding mods and point you in the right direction, our forum is the place to go for detailed advice and tips on your modified car project, the best uprated parts and all aspects of modding cars. One of the biggest mechanical motorsport parts you can do on your NASP engine is to fit a fast road camshaft .

The intake and exhaust flow play a large part in your cars power band, but be careful here, getting this wrong can upset the idle and make the car impossible to drive in traffic. You'd need to follow a camshaft upgrade with other mods and finish with a reflashed ECU to fully realise your gains.

When pushing up the power you will need to pay attention to to the fuelling. More power needs more fuel.

If you find you have flat spots and power surges after your uprated parts you should check the fuelling and try a higher octane fuel as well. Uprated injectors will enable you to supply sufficient fuel to the engine.

Uprate the fuel pump to cope with the extra fuel requirements of your tuned 500Xs uprated injectors.

Intake and Exhaust Tuning.

Breathing mods are usually next up. Air induction kits will only help to boost performance if your cars air intake is struggling! Adding an induction kit to most standard engines will see LITTLE LOW END POWER GAIN AT ALL. If you have heavily modified your engine and it's need for air INCREASES DRAMATICALLY then an induction kit is the answer and will help remove this restriction.

Induction kits can work well on turbo engines and larger engines (if supplied with a suitable cold air feed or air box), generally though we'd just recommend for 500X engines you should go with a performance panel air filter preferably made from cotton.

Sports exhausts can usually air flow from the engine but avoid an exhaust that is too large or you may end up will reduce the flow rate. Stick to 1.5 to 2.5 inches as a rule of thumb.

Airflow through the head can be dramatically increased with some professional flowed (porting and polishing). These should match and be setup to take into account any other engine mods.

A good fast road sports clutch will help to keep that power going where it should. Never skimp or ask your standard OEM clutch to cope. The best mods that we recommend for your 500X are a remap especially on a turbo, a fast road camshaft and sports exhaust, with a good air intake.

NASP engines do not achieve big power gains if you remap them, unless you have done extensive modifications. With turbocharged engines this is another story.

Handling/Suspension upgrades

Improving the handling for DIY mechanics first priority in your 500X tuning project.

If you set the toe out to 0.9 to 1.5 degrees on the front, and add a bit of negative camber then cornering will often improve.

Drop the car by as much as 28mm - 37 mm and fit uprated stiffer dampers, bigger drops will need other modifications in most instances.

Alloy wheel upgrades.

Because alloys are less heavy they improve performance and they can help to cool the brake disks. We can't go into too much detail here about tires but they are how the car puts the power down on the road so are a critical choice. track legal slick tires work well on 500X, and make a big difference over budget tires. Large 500X alloys can decrease performance. If you get big alloys you will be changing your final drive ratio.

With this in mind endeavour to keep the overall rolling diameter of the wheel the standard factory sizes. In all cases not going larger than 16 inches.
